The following is a great story that appears in today's Daily Independent.

When Ashland’s senior point guard learned about Terrence Smith’s automobile accident that would cost Smith his senior basketball season, his heart sank, even though he really didn’t know Smith aside from their basketball battles.

Skaggs still felt a connection with Smith, who would have been Lewis County’s senior point guard.

Skaggs told his father, Todd Skaggs, about what had happened and they immediately went into fundraising mode for the injured 16th Region star.

“It really shook him up,” Todd Skaggs said. “He said ‘Dad, what can we do?’ I told him we could raise some money.”

Ashland’s team collected in excess of $7,000 – with a promise to reach at least $10,000 — to help defray medical expenses for the Smith family. Will Skaggs presented the money to Lewis County coach Joe Hampton prior to Tuesday night’s season opener in Anderson gymnasium.

Hampton accepted it on behalf of the Smith family. “It’s very generous and just the thoughtfulness of the whole thing is special,” he said. “You go against these coaches all the time but when something like this happens, you see the human side of people.”

Skaggs played AAU with some of the GRC players this summer. Very nice young man and from a great family. This dosn't suprise me a bit.

Terrific story!:thumb:

Awesome story. There was a similar story in Ohio last week when Elder (I think) raised money for an injured player on another team.

Warms the heart.

I have a new found respect for Coach Biggs and the Ashland Tomcats. That was an awesome gesture and I'm sure very much appreciated.
