November 26, 200916 yr I suppose someone with access to the information could determine how many annual SEEK dollars are generated by a "perfect attendee" as opposed to an "average attendee" (different for each school district). Perhaps the difference is worth a few bucks. Although I don't necessarily agree with the practice. Seems like it would encourage students to attend when they might be sick enough that staying home would be more appropriate. Kinda like the employees of Toyota who are (they used to do this) eligibile to be placed in a drawing for a free car if they don't miss any work days.

November 28, 200916 yr Athletes at my school that attend regional or state competitions are NOT counted absent. The same is true for academic team Governor's Cup and other academic related competitions. Students can also apply for an "academic enhancement" trip for non-school related trips that are academic in nature, such as college visits. Why would absences matter? In the grand scheme of things, very little. We do have an attendance requirement for some events, such as prom. You have to have a minimum 95% attendance for that year. There is a method for applying for a waiver due to extenuating circumstances, such as the student that we have that suffers from Cystic Fibrosis and missed something like 12 days of school last year. Then again, for some folks, "perfect attendance" means waaaaayyyyyy more than it should. That fact that some schools award kids cash for perfect attendance is something I find absolutely ridiculous. And this comes from a kid who went about eight straight years without missing before I was able to explain to my parents logically that it really wasn't that big a deal for me to miss occasionally when I was covering their carpet with puke.

November 29, 200916 yr Shouldn't be any difference between this and going on a school field trip. It should be counted as the athletes on a school field trip and present.
