Does your school pull freshman up?

Featured Replies

All 13th Region schools play freshmen on the varsity, if they are good enough, and I'm pretty sure that's true at all schools in the 12th, 14th and 15th regions.

I know when I went through SK would do it spairingly but seldomly to play varsity, atleast not inititally. I know Mike Brock played up his freshmen year but he also went on to be on All State player, it certainly didn't happen frequently. I would think that it would be different for each coach rather than each school per se.

Simon played a freshman last year in Cody Chambers.

I like that they kids play up, but if they get a lot of minutes, don't move them back down.

There are two lines of thought on this. Most coaches will put the best 5 players on the floor regardless of age. However some coaches are loyal to upperclassmen because they feel that seniors have "paid their dues." These coaches live and die with the older kids. Two philosophies, neither is right or wrong.

I think the kids should play on the level that they can be challenged. If a Freshman is dominating on the Freshman level and that level does not provide him enough competition he should move up to the level where he can be challenged. This will make him a better player.

Dixie Heights had a 7th grader, Hatton, who played alot of JV minutes and some varsity minutes last year. He is very good and may be a contributer at the varsity level this year.
Holmes had an 8th grader play jv and varsity on a state championship team last year in christian mcclendon.

Mason Monroe started at PG for Pendleton last year and will again this year as a freshman.

IMO, doesn't matter what grade you are in, if you can play, you can play. Also, a player should either be good enough to start Varsity or not good enough so he/she starts JV. Most schools use the starting five for JV(as long as they are not seniors) as the 2nd team to come in off the bench. SO a good player that just needs experience, young especially, can start JV and then come in quickly into the Varsity game.
