I don't follow high school football as much as I do basketball, but I have legitimate question regarding the BGP Polls. How are the teams determined and who votes? My reasoning for asking the question is this, Central has been atop the poll almost all season and if it is the same Central I checked on the KHSAA scoreboard, they have a losing record. Why isn't Somerset and Mason Co. atop the poll as Nos. 1 and 2? Why is Central even ranked? Just wondering?

The BGP poll is not just a listing of teams with the best records. The voters are from all over the state and each comes in with a different perspective. It isn't just a poll, where you submit votes, it is a discussion forum where each person gives his/her thoughts and is expected to back them up.

Long story short, the voters feel Central is the best team in the class.

The teams are ranked based upon what the voters think would happen if they played today. If Central is ranked ahead of Mason Co, its because the voters feel like if the two teams played today on a neutral field, Central would win.

A teams record is taken into account, but it isn't the only factor. Schedule strength and how a team performs against better competition is considered heavily.

A winning record isn't everything. I am glad BGP has a poll that is not solely governed by whether a team has a pristine record. It's not always whether you won, but who you beat and who you played. Central has played the #1, #2, #7, and #8 teams in 6A (three classes above them), as well as two other highly regarded 6A programs in Manual and Seneca. They've been fairly competitive in all of them, and beat Ballard, the current #7 team. It's not really a stretch at all to say that one win is better than any on Somerset or Mason County's schedules.

Ask yourself these questions:

1) If Mason County or Somerset lined up against Central next week, who would you take to win?

2) If Mason County or Somerset played the schedule Central had, would they have fared any better? Would they even have a win against any of those 6A schools?

Do not be trapped by the records.
