Rockcastle Co. seems to be too low to me and Breathitt Co. should be in there somewhere.

I didn't know Bell and Whitley were 1 and 2. That makes the game Friday night even more intriguing.

 

Also, how longs it been since Belfry wasn't in the top 10? I'd say several years. I think Somerset has been the surprise team thus far this year.

It's been a while since NL has been in the mountain top 10. And the road for Larkey doesn't get any easier. He has #2 Whitley Co, #3 Corbin and #5 Letcher Central on his schedule.... and all on the road!

 

It is interesting to see both NL and Lawrence in there this season. Last year North won 2 games, ... 1 against Lawrence Co who really struggled. Now both teams are playing very well. Good to see the difference a year can make in a program.

While Somerset is a big surprise, .. I think that North Laurel and Lawrence County would be the 2 biggest surprises to me in this poll. They were a combined 2-19 last year, and played each other to open the season last year. Lawrence County scored 94 pts in 11 games and gave up 359. That is an average losing score of 33 to 9.

Very good point. I guess the thing that stuck out with me about Somerset is losing their coach a couple weeks before the season started. Thus far Lawrence Co. and NL have been great stories.

Nope. They have been there before, but not since 2004 when Blair was a senior at North and possibly preseason in 2005 when Cessna was a senior. But they have not been a frequent resident of the top 10.

That is true about the coaching change. But the kids at Somerset seem to have adapted well.

I know that NL has been a great story, but the turnaround in Lawrence Count is even more remarkable IMHO. But in hindsight, they played a brutal schedule for a 1st year coach.

 

I was involved in broadcasting the Lawrence Co vs NL game in the Cumberland Valley Bowl. I remember remarking that in the next few years, the folks in Lawrence County would be pleased with their program once Coach Salmons had some time with these kids. Lawrence County has had some very good football teams in the past, but had fallen on hard times. You could see they had some talent, but they had forgotten how to win. It seems to have come back to them this year and good for them. I didn't think he could resurrect the program this quick.

 

As far as NL, I have seen these kids play for years and knew they had talent. Larkey seems to be a master at getting the most out of every kid. I think they try to emulate his passion and genuine excitement for the game, and it shows.

 

For both these teams, I don't see this being a 1 year fluke. Sometimes, you just need the right guy at the right time and both seem to have found it!

I think they did lose quite a few players and their schedule is tough. Things just haven't clicked this year the way they have more often than not since Coach Matney arrived. I'm like you, ... I fully expected JCHS to be a permanent resident of the top 10 with Coach Matney there and have been suprised by the start to their season as well.

I remember watching a game at there stadium last year. If I remember right, it seemed like every first down they got (which there were many) they played music. They had some very nice facilities.

I have only been to 1 game at JCHS and their fans are extremely passionate about their team. I haven't been to the new stadium, but hear it is very nice!
