Tigers outscore Eagles 28-6 after halftime.

This was actually an entertaining football game. The pass connection from Keaton Hall to J.P. Willett is proving to be dynamite for the Tigers, and its a good thing, too, because Ricky Harper was clearly not 100% tonight for Bardstown. Unsung in the offense is the workhorse play of Deangelo Poynter running inside.

 

Bardstown's defense was better. The trio of linebackers, Cocanougher, Culver, and Whitfield, played well tonight and were more aggressive. They need to tackle in the open field better. C.J. Jackson appears to be a nice lineup substitution in the defensive backfield, and had the INT return for TD. The defensive line must get better, we got shoved around too much in the first half.

 

I will tell you, I was impressed by Bethlehem. They proved me wrong, they were much quicker than I thought they'd be and had some solid line play, too. #61 Peake was outstanding. Casey Robinson is a playmaker, and has come a long, long way from when I saw him back in Little League baseball. Clay Owens is a tough, physical quarterback and linebacker. He reminds me a lot of former Eagle Kent Simpson, now playing at Centre. I don't think this team is as good as the 2006 Eagles, yet, anyway, but they have a lot to build with and the coaching staff should be commended. I expect them to challenge for a District title in Class A, and possibly even some playoffs victories.

Strong game by Bardstown QB Keaton Hall, who went 15-22 for 246 yards and four scores, with 1 INT. JP Willett was the biggest beneficiary, catching eight balls for 169 yards and 2 TDs. Hall also had a big game punting, with three of his four boots going for 50 yards or more. A 50-yarder in the fourth quarter was downed on the 1-foot line, and eventually resulted in an INT return for a TD.

 

Bardstown running back Deangelo Poynter had a strong effort, rushing 17 times for 102 yards and a score, and was really big in helping the Tigers burn up clock in the second half.

 

The Bethlehem defense did a great job keeping Ricky Harper under wraps -- he had 62 combined yards and a TD -- but keying on him left things open for Hall and Poynter to have big games.

 

The much-maligned Tiger defense came up big, allowing only 307 yards and forcing four turnovers. Tigers put up 376 yards of offense and turned it over twice.

For Bethlehem, Luke Wimpsett had 86 total yards and 2 TDs.

 

Clay Owens passed for 146 yards and a score, and rushed for 58 yards and another score. He had a long run of 35+ yards in the fourth quarter but missed out on getting credit for the yards when he coughed it up and a teammate recovered. Owens was picked off three times.

 

Casey Robinson had 70 combined yards rushing and receiving.

How does a defense, even a "much-maligned" one, come up big allowing over 300 yds? 4 TOs is great, but 300 yds it too much to receive praise. Assuming 50 snaps, that's 6 yds a pop.

You've gotta start somewhere -- it's been 500 each of the first two games. The four turnovers is indeed the important factor, because they were able to capitalize on them. They are awful young, and have a good chance to improve a great deal in the long term.
