Williamsburg 36 Jellico, TN 16

Featured Replies

Williamsburg limps in with several injuries and takes this one over a much improved Jellico squad.

Looks like Williamsburg overcame so adversity to gut out a win.

Jackets are still the likely favorite in District 6, but they're really going to have to get healthy if they won't to make some hay in the playoffs. At full strength they have a pretty nice squad.

With Lowrie and Barton out for probably the year the District favorite swings to Campbellsville with LC right on their heels.

Some of the Burg's younger players will get better with time this season. They have a murderer's row of a schedule coming up. I thought the last touchdown with less than 2 minutes left wasn't necessary, but that is football. I wish those young men the best this season, and best of luck to the coaches...good folks all the way around.

After the mess I watched against Clay County and LC last night, you may want to put C'ville as the sole leader. If they don't fix some things fast, it won't matter.:irked:

It was scary.:scared:

I heard that W'burg struggled some last night. Can anyone elaborate?

No love lost in this series. I recall Jellico having a female player score on Wburg a few years back during the Bob Rose era. Wburg of course, had the great Beth Bates in the 80's who kicked for the team and gained fame by scoring on the Blue Devils. The coaches from those two teams maybe long gone, but there are still fans around both programs who share a common passion for beating each other. It is things like this that make for some good natured rivalries. No doubt the last TD was a reminder of days and events gone by.

Agreed. And their locations, just across the state line from one another adds another element to the rivalary.

Williamsburg was short a few starters due to injury, and had several players starting their first varsity game ever. Offense struggled but may have found a few answers as well. Travis Thomas turned in an outstanding performance at running back with over 120 yards and a couple of touchdowns.Pettit made a number of nice catches and showed he could be dominant. For the most part the offensive line protected well, Root and Collins were impressive, and after Perkins left with cramps, Mitchell was serviceable at Center.

Possibly the most impressive aspect of the night was the oft maligned defense. Perkins was playing well until cramps hit. The front of Mack, Mitchell, and Hall held Jellico's rushing game in check, and Root was a warrior on d, not sure if he ever left the field. Cody Hill in his first start at safety forced a fumble Also Logan Hamlin gave late relief and made several nice plays.

History says a team makes its greatest improvements between week one and two, I look for alot of improvement on the Jackets part.

The score was 30 - 0 with 6:05 left in the game. Williamsburg subed down on special teams, Jellico ran the kickoff back. Jellico onside kicks and Williamsburg's return team ran into each other and Jellico recovers. Jellico takes the ball and scores in a few plays (Williamsburg had subed down as much as they could, none left healthy to put in the game). Williamsburg gets the ball after another Jellico onside kick and runs the clock out scoring with 1:14 left. I don't think it was anything but the coach trying to make sure Jellico did not get the ball back with time to score and try a onside kick. You have seen Coach Herron take a knee in the first half and you personally have heard him tell people that he will not run the score up. I know he considers you and Coach Oaks a friend and would not disrespect those friendships.

Definately agreed. That is why I said that is football. If the defense can't stop a run play then what do you expect a kid to do kneel on his own after the first down. With the injuries there was no one but the Thomas kid to carry it. He is a load. I certainly didn't feel the score was run up. At least for jellicos sake it wasn't 57-0 again.

As volfan said the D did a good job. Hatcher went against his reservations about blitzing and stunting which made that defense a force.

Wasn't necessary, meaning it had no consequence on the final outcome. It was out of reach for Jellico at that point. 14 points in 60 seconds with no timeouts is virtually impossible, unless you are Pineville from 2007.

Jel;lico played hard throughout and improved dramatically from the beginning to end. Their kids, fans and coaches never quit. They seemed to have more fun in a loss than Williamsburg did in a win. Williamsburg was not sharp or this one would have got ugly early. Moses played better than his stats reflected and Thomas was a pleasant surprise on both sides of the ball. Petit appears much improved. The last touchdown came on the play after a Jellico timeout. Jellico still thought they had a chance or why would they call a timeout. Williamsburg just took away any chance that they may have had. I expect Jellico to be much better in this 3nd week and wish them luck for the rest of the season.

Looks like this game may end up being the high lite of the first 5 games for Williamsburg, maybe they should have had more fun in the win.
