Who knows what the reason for her resignation, but she has devoted many years to NKY girls basketball (at Boone County as well as at Notre Dame). She leaves the same way she coached, with class. She will be missed in the NKY basketball community and especially at Notre Dame. Good Luck to her and her family in the future!

Given this news and the timing of it, does that allow a current staff member to replace her or do the Pandas go outside for a new coach???

My take on this is simple. Cheryl has 5 beautiful kids and an extremely supportive husband. Most of the kids are now playing multiple sports in grade school and summer leagues.

As much as she loves NDA there is just no way to juggle all of this. NDA every year would travel day after Christmas for a week and many weekends in Louisville touraments througout the season. Two hours everyday after school for practice and 30 games in general. I don't know how she did it for so long but my family is most appreciative of the dedication she put forth.

I would expect to see her return to HS coaching after the kids grow up. For now I suspect those kids are going to have a really good parent coach.

Below are just a couple of the best reasons in the world.

I would assume the timing of this tells us she wanted to ensure that her assistant gets the job. I might do the same out of loyalty to my assistants if I were her.

The other part of me says she saw a drop in talent for a few years and figured this was as good a time as any. She may not have it in her anymore. Add in what Panda mentioned about 5 kids and it all adds up to "time to roll on out of here."

Nice guess?

NDA's assistants from 2008-09 had also decided to not return for this season long ago, and while a five senior graduating class would likely lead to a drop in talent anywhere, the cupboards at an all girls school will never be totally bare, especially the one in Park Hills.

As for Coach Darpel, I guarantee you she still has it in her and I applaud the choice she made, Good Luck Coach Darpel, and Go Pandas!

Have to agree with Bleacher Creature. Notre Dame still has to be the favorite in their district and we all know anything can happen in regionals.
