KillerCats09 Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 How about we get some insight on the freshmen team - this is a new and exciting era for Newport. The varsity has Coach Nick Rice bringing back the pride in the program and the "Return to Dominance." The freshmen team will be lead by former Newport player - David Simpson. Coach Simpson was a dominate player when he played at Newport and knows what the program needs to succeed. With that said - I'd like to hear some opinions and insight from others about the freshmen team.
Einstein70 Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 What happen to Pic? What about the assitant coach's? The Newport varsity has almost a hole new staff.
Einstein70 Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 Numbers for the frosh are very very low. I think they only have around 15 or so.
NHS BIG DADDY Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I think they only have around 15 or so. Im not sure its even that many.
Voice of Reason Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I think they only have around 15 or so. Sounds like they need to start texting their boys and get some 8th graders to step up. Peer pressure is the way to get the numbers up.
20/20Hindsight Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Im not sure its even that many. I've heard it was as few as 13...and of those, I'm not sure how many are consistently showing up.
KillerCats09 Posted August 6, 2009 Author Posted August 6, 2009 Newport's freshmen will be competitive even with the low numbers. Coach Simpson has them getting in shape and understanding the game. As far as Pic - he produced some talented freshmen teams but is not coaching this season. The assistant coaches are Garrett Williams (former Newport player) and Tony Baldwin (also a former Newport player). The numbers will pick up - I believe within a few weeks they will be up to 22 players.

KillerCats09 Posted August 6, 2009 Author Posted August 6, 2009 Where are these other guys at that will make up 22 and where have they been? It is really tough to say that they will be up to 22 players - basically it is wishful thinking - numbers are always good but then again I believe that when Varsity Coach Nick Rice was a freshmen they had about 15 - 17 players and they knocked off some big schools. Now, the expectation is that Newport High School will be having a freshmen camp next week and perhaps some more players will come out from it.

Im not saying they cant be competitive, but at this point they barely even have enough kids to field a team.

NHS BIG DADDY Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 I understand that - last I heard they are up to around 16 players. They are not all showing up then. They have been getting about 10 or so showing up.
