MJ, Pippen, and Grant were losing in the playoffs to Detroit and Boston before Phil Jackson got there. Pippen and Grant didn't just automatically show up with Phil Jackson.

No, he didn't leave because of medical reasons after Kobe-Shaq. He left because of Kobe and Shaq. He also had that book come out where he was talking junk on Kobe and after Shaq left, it was pretty a pretty tense situation. He walked away then because he 9 titles and he didn't have to tolerate Kobe if he didn't want to. He came back a couple years later after a more mature Kobe realized he needed Phil Jackson as a coach and convinced Phil he was ready to listen now.

 

The medical issues were never serious enough to keep him out of coaching, obviously.

Rick Adelman shouldn't be discussed in this thread at all. He has great numbers as far as coaching wins, but he has lost to Phil while in Portland, Sacramento, and now Houston. He can't beat Phil whatsoever and he has had more opportunities than most.

 

Only one time (Sacramento) did he have a team capable of beating them, IMO. That's like saying Donnie Tyndall is a crappy coach because Morehead couldn't beat U of L in the NCAA tournament.

 

Popovich is behind Phil Jackson in my book. To be able to wins as consistently as Pops has is a testament to his coaching abilities. That being said, I'd still go with Phil, but Pops is indeed one of the top 5, possibly top 3 coaches of all time, IMO.

The '92 Finals was just a mismatch plain and simple. No amount of adjustments or coaching would have saved the Blazers.

 

And as for Donny T, if he continues to win at Morehead he will get a shot with bigger programs, maybe not Kansas or UCLA but a bigger program than MSU if he chooses. Most coaches don't just show up at Duke or UNC and say "I'm ready to coach."

True, they start at places like Morehead State, beat teams like UL or UK consistently when given the opportunity like Horn did at WKU or Ford at EKU, and then they move up. Until he can prove he can beat the big boys and that he is a good coach, he'll remain at Morehead State or a school similar to Morehead State.

This is 4th season at MSU I think. He took over a team that won like 4 games the season before he got there, and in a matter of years turned them in to conference champions. He has also really improved the overall talent base at MSU. Faried is being looked at by NBA scouts, and he has two high major transfers in Ty Proffitt and Slone, though Slone was a walkon.

How has he given him problems when he never wins? Giving him problems would mean that he wins. I can't remember the last time(if ever) that Adelman has beat Phil in a playoff series.

 

Many many coaches have had less talent than Phil and beaten him in a playoff series. I think that is what makes you a good coach. Larry Brown beat Phil in 2004 when Phil arguably had one of his most talented teams ever.

And it's more like if Peja hadn't choked.......2 years in a row. CWebb choked in the clinching games also...but that's Webber's m.o. anyways. I am a Webber fan, but he has a history of choking in important games.
