What does the 13th look like this coming fall? I haven't followed volleyball much, and all I know is that North Laurel is moving from the 12th to the 13th this fall. I think South Laurel is making that move as well.

 

Any information would be appreciated! I see where Corbin won the region in 2008 and was curious who the favorites would be this year.

Not sure about the other 13th region teams and their middle school situations, but North and South Laurel really need to get middle school volleyball going in a big way. They need to have kids coming in who already understand the game. Right now, they are getting kids coming in as freshman who have never played organized volleyball. Hard to compete at the same level as those teams who begin playing in grade school. On the upside, North Laurel had 42 girls come out for volleyball this past week. For the first time in school history (that I know of), the HS volleyball coach will have to cut.

 

I have a niece in Louisville who started playing volleyball last year, .... in kindergarten! When you are starting kids that young, you really get a ton of experience under their belt which is a HUGE positive for any program.

Kindergarten wow! It used to be just soccer and tball that started that young. I guess that is what we need to start doing in northern KY to keep up with Louisville! I sure hope that interest continues to grow in young kids.

She actually played soccer, volleyball and swam for her school in kindergarten. I believe it was St Raphael. I was shocked, but also learned that at that age, if you can get it over the net, you pretty much are going to score. Not a lot of serves returned.

IMO Corbin lost a couple of their key players and will be hard pressed to repeat last years success. Whitley Co. may be the up and coming team this year in the 13th.

I think North could be the surprise of the 13th. 42 girls came out (12 will have to be cut, for the first time in school history). They return a solid core of juniors and seniors and believe they can compete for a regional title this year. I think they only lost 2 seniors from last year's squad. I believe that Clay will be pretty good. South should be the regional favorite right now so North will get to see them twice before the postseason and see if they are ready to play at that level yet.

NKYVC has a K-3rd volleyball program called "Sprinkles", here in N Ky. They use special balls for the kids. The net is at 6 feet. They just teach the fundamentals of passing, setting and serving. It's a great program!

Thanks for the information breadwinner. I had no idea. That is great news. Hopefully this info gets out to all the parents of young kids. I know I will be telling people about it.

Starting them young is a great idea. And volleyball is such a fun game to watch and play, these programs are a GREAT idea! I wish we had them in SEKY. We have little league for baseball, softball, football, basketball, etc, ... but nothing for volleyball. I hope the sport keeps growing and picking up interest. But heck, we can't even get the middle schools to start volleyball programs due to it would be at the same time as girls basketball.

Some schools in your area have middle school in the spring. I know Whitley County and Rockcastle do.
