I thought ESPN asked a nice question today on their homepage, so I'll ask it on here. Who would you rather have in Game 7?

Kobe and it's not even close for me.

Obviously (noticing your avatar) but why?

Josh Beckett. The guy is money when on the mound during the playoffs... maybe one of the best of all time.

He's the Black Mamba come on. :D

My only problem with Kobe is I think back to his game 7 against Phoenix a couple of season's ago. I believe they issued an Amber Alert for him during that game.

Beckett has proven himself time and time again in post-season elimination games. I don't see how you go against him.

What do Kobe's numbers look like in elimination games?

Seriously why Kobe? I can't recall him having any great elimination game performances.

From wikipedia on Brodeur, which is probably the real answer even though we do not know as much about him...

Playoffs

  • Most shutouts in a playoff (7, in 2002–03)
  • Most shutouts in playoffs, career: 23

Tied with Patrick Roy.

  • Most shutouts in a Stanley Cup final (3, in 2002–03)

Tied with Toronto Maple Leafs' Frank McCool.

  • 2nd place: 94 Wins
  • 3rd goaltender to win the Stanley Cup with a Game-7 shutout in 2002–03.
  • 1st goaltender in history to have 3 shutouts in two different playoff series. (1995 against Boston in the Conference Quarterfinals, 2003 against Anaheim in the Stanley Cup final.)

Post-season and elimination games are two totally different discussions IMO.

Kobe hasn't been in many elimination games because they closed the deal before that. :D

Then you don't remember back to 2002 when he had two straight 30+ point performances against the Kings in a classic 7 game series to take the series. Kobe has had his moments.. but also some goofy ones in elimination situations.

2 games doesn't make you the best of the best, which is how I took the thread. Kobe is a great clutch player, but I don't think he's been in the environment of an elimination game enough to qualify for the discussion yet.

Thus he doesn't qualify. :D
