CovCath 14 Conner 1 (5 innings)

Isler had it going.

 

I know X's pitching coach was there. I heard UC was there as well.

Wow..this team ever gonna get any respect from the rest of the state?

On a day with the wind blowing in from the outfield, and the temps and wind chill dropping, Zach Isler with the help of some outstanding defense held Conner to just 1 run in todays game to pick up his fifth victory of the season.

Of course the bats of CovCath gave Ice a 3-0 lead even before he threw his first pitch of the game as Siemer, Maile, and Darner all singled and Isler made an out to knock in a run.

In CovCath top of the second CovCath scored a run via Krumps infamous small ball. Holocher leads off with a double, and took third on a Eggemeier out to the right side of the infield. Holly on third with one out and Martin at the plate, and Martin executes a perfect suicide squeeze to score Holocher and give the Colonels a four to nothing lead after two innings.

In the top of the third this time with Maile leading off, he gets his second base hit of the game and after Darner draws a walk, Isler hits a double to score Maile. Men on second and third and no outs and Lafever at the plate and he hits a single to score Darner and Isler moves to third. Holocher up at the plate and Lafever steals second base so Holocher has men on second and third and Holocher then hits a SF to the centerfielder to score Isler. CovCath takes a seven to nothing lead.

Isler through the first three innings was just unhittable, as he only gave up a single hit to Liechty in the first, struck out two and with the help of some nice fielding by Darner, and Siemer threw only a total of 30 pitches in those three innings. The scouts from X and UC had to be drooling.

In the top of the fourth Conner doesn’t allow CovCath to score a run but Maile does get his third single of the game.

In the bottom of the fourth Conner gets their first runner on with a base on balls but then the CovCath infield comes to the rescue, with a nice Holocher, to Siemer to Krumme 6-4-3 double play. Two outs and Brake at the plate and Ice walks Tyler on four pitches and as usual, the walk comes back to score. Noll gets a single followed by a single by Vargo to knock in the only run for Conner in the game, before Ice strikes out the next batter to put a stop to the Conner inning.

After the end of four complete innings it is CovCath 7 Conner 1

In the top of the CovCath fifth Holocher goes HBP as does Eggemeier, then Warning walks on four straight pitches. Bases loaded and Siemer at the plate and he hits a pop up that the Conner second basemen muffs and everybody is safe with two runs scoring. Maile then hits a rocket down the left field line for a double and his fourth hit of the game to drive in one run before Darner hits his second Home Run of the season over the right field fence hitting the light pole flush (345 #2) for a three run HR. CovCath now leads 14-1.

The bottom of the fifth Conner goes 6-3 then they get a single, but again Holocher, Siemer and Krumme come to the rescue to turn a nifty 6-4-3 double play to end the game….

 

Stats, the good, the bad and the ugly in a couple of minutes.

 

I want to thank the Conner Coaches Brad Arlinghaus and Greg Hoskins first for giving me a Conner updated roster and also for getting their field in the outstanding condition that it was in, so this game could be played. Thank you gentlemen.

Who pitched for Conner?

The good had to be Isler pitching. It was cold and it was windy but Ice was hot and with the CovCath infield just making play after play, Ice was just outstanding. Oh,and the bats of the Colonels were indeed hot.

 

I would be remiss to not include a outstanding heads up play by Adam Warning. He was on 1st base when Siemer hit the pop up and Warning broke for second but slowed down just enough, while not getting into the way of the Conner second basemen but IMO just enough that the young man took his eye off the ball, which I believe caused the muff. Great head up play Adam...

 

The bad: Gee, how can there be any bad when you beat the second best team in the Ninth Region at their field so convincingly in five innings.

 

The ugly: My vote goes to the weather. When is it gonna get warm and dry. Just a nasty, nasty day to sit watching a baseball game. The wind, the dampness, the lack of sun all made it just a nasty, nasty day..

Who pitched for Conner?

 

Noll started and went four complete innings. He threw 73 pitches gave up 7 runs with all 7 runs being earned. Noll gave up 9 hits while facing 22 CovCath batters striking out no one, and walking only one batter.

 

Ross came in to relieve Noll in the fifth and pitched one complete inning. He threw 35 pitches gave up 7 runs but only 5 were earned. He gave up 2 hits one being a HR. He walked two and had 2 HBP. He struck out no one while facing 10 CovCath batters.

 

Liechty 3 PA 1 hit

Roberts 2 PA reached by fc and 1 walk

Brake 2 PA 1 run scored and 1 walk

Noll 2 PA 1 hit

Vargo 1 hit and 1 rbi

BTW is there a hotter hitter in the Ninth Region at the moment than the CovCath third baseman Ryan Darner? Against Bishop Brossart he had a HR, a single and a double and 6 rbi's! In todays game he had a single, a base on ball and his second HR of the season, plus another 5 rbi's.

 

So that 11 rbi's in two games.... 2 HR's, 2 singles and a double. Not a bad bit of work, besides playing an outstanding third base.

 

And to think some don't think he is good enough to play D1 college ball. D1 coaches, you are missing out on a steal if you don't sign this young man soon. Trust me, someone will and you are gonna kick yourself in the butt for not signing him one day, when he plays against you.

Where would Noll rank on Conner's pitching staff? I know their ace is out and West is up there and since I don't follow Conner too close I haven't heard of Noll.

Darner had only four rbi's and Noll the Conner starting pitcher had six earned runs and one unearned run. Sorry for the mistake.

Not sure but I'm guessing their ace pitched the two innings at Boone before it got rained out the day before.

IMO Noll would fall in at number 3 after Shuttleworth and Samad, maybe even 4 after West!

It sure seemed like Arlo quickly realized the Cougars were not going to win and left Noll in to take one for the team.

Were Samad and West unavailable to throw?

Let's start by saying Cov Cath out played Conner in all aspects of the game. They pitched better, they hit better and they fielded better. The statement was definately by Isler that he, right now, is the best pitcher in the 9th region. He was not untouchable, but when Conner could get runners on base, they hit into 2 or 3 double plays.

 

Conner's pitching really couldn't match Isler's. Shuttleworth is still out. Samad pitched in Conner's district seeding game on Monday vs Boone. That left Noll or West. Ross came on in relief in the 5th, and this was his first appearence on the mound this season. In fact, he was just cleared to play Monday after surgery last week on his right hand. Conner also needed to think of this weekend's games against Lex Cath, West Jessamine and Boyd Co. All this added up to a very thin pitching staff.

 

One last note. All 7 of the runs given up by Ross in the 5th were unearned.
