He was (is) a Navy Seal and said he knew all of the shooters and one of them was a good friend of his. I told him to tell them good job and keep up the good work. Guy I went to HS with and knew really well, came home after being in the NAVY for a while, he trained WAY HARD to join the NAVY and do the SEAL training. Made it VERY FAR, until he said they weren't weeding you out physically but psychologically. He said that you had to be ready to kill anyone for the benefit of the mission, or "die for the mission". He said as bad as he wanted to be a SEAL, that at 20, almost 21 he just wasn't there yet. He later regretted and went back, only to have a bad shoulder injury in training, but last I'd heard he was still trying to become a SEAL, that was about 9 months ago. He said the one thing that he did learn though is that knowing what he did made him realize how safe our country is because guys like that exist, which also made me sleep a little better and admire those guys even more.

Arm the crew with some weapons and hang a flag on the ship that says "Pirate Season".

The odds are probably good that many of the sailors on board those ships have no idea what the true threat level is from a group like that. As far as they know the RPG is enough to blow them out of the water. That is unlikely unless it somehow hit the fuel tank. Even so, unless you arm the crew and train them they would be putting their lives on the line when, in their mind, ransom would be easier. Many people just give in when presented with any kind of force, untrained sailors who think they are just transporting cargo from point A to point B are not trained to fight so the odds are good that they have no desire to do so. I am not for that, I am just explaining why it is possible.

If I'm the company that owns these ships and I see this threat happening over and over, I mount a few machine guns along the rails, hire an extra hand or two that knows how to use them and eliminate the pirates. If that's not an option, then we need to put a few decoy cargo ships in the water that are loaded with soldiers.
