Blue Magic Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 I'm sure TOG will have some stats and comments a little later. Good pitching by Krumme but sub par bullpen appearances by Martin and Gerwe. :ohbrother: Good job by Darner to close it out. The bats aren't quite there all the way for the Colonels but they're getting there. Also Scott's Sauder (sp?) was 4-4 today while getting the loss from the bump.

That would be Scott's Zach Sowder who went 4-4. Scott, IMO, will struggle at the beginning of the season as they will be trying to figure out who works where and at what positions and the order of the lineup. With that being said though, they should improve as the season goes on.
Theoldguy Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Stayed a little longer to watch some of the JV game..... As Blue Magic said Krumme, and Darner had good outing but the biggest surprise was seeing Schumate (sp) coming into the game with the bases loaded and two outs. The young Colonel in his varsity outing got the batter to ground into a easy 6-3 to end the inning. He then went one, two, gave up a single to Zach Sowder (outstanding game by this Scott player 4-4 and scored three runs) before he got the next batter to fly out to left. The Colonels had nine hits today in scoring their nine runs of which seven were earned. Darner went 3-3 (double) with a run scored and a RBI while Maile went 2-2 with a BB and 2 runs scored and 2 RBI's CovCath committed two errors but it only lead to one Scott run today and with the field not in the best of condition, the infielders did good enough. In the bottom of the sixth Coach Krumps brought in a lot of subs to bat and play the field so everybody pretty much got to play today. Mattie got to bat and hit into a 5-3 out, but he got to hit. Funny comment of the day:lol:: Darner told me after the game, that he is now a pitcher first, an infielder, then a outfielder, then a hitter. Yea right RD!:ohbrother::lol: Just keep hitting the ball into RD-ville and we all will be happy. Got to talk with the Cincinnati Enquirer sports writer Richard Skinner today throughout the game so look for an article on this game sometime Sunday..... The good: Hitter's who are suppose to hit started to hit and the play of the "D" in the conditions continue to be good. The bad: The outing of Gerwe/Martin but I really am not worried about either, they are young and will come around. The ugly: Chilly, wet, and dark... The weather.... Check those stats out TOG :sssh:.
Oscar Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 With CovCath scoring 9 runs and their hitting really not all that outstanding as I feel it has the potential to be and will end up being, I think that's a good showing for them. The usual suspects of Darner, Isler, and Maile brought in 5 of the runs, with Nutini adding another two. The fielding looked pretty good, and the only worry was the pitching. Krumme had a good showing but after that it was an apparent drop off. Hopefully Gerwe and Martin can continue to progress and improve throughout the season, and I'm sure they'll be just fine. Sowder played well for Scott, and Hiller had some nice hits too. Good to see EJ out there playing against a couple of his buddies on the CovCath team.
Theoldguy Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Holocher struck out twice, I believe. Check those stats out TOG :sssh:. Nope, Holocher 6-3 in the second on the first pitch, 4-3 in the third on a 2-0 pitch, and the K in the fifth on a 1-2 count, but I will check it out with Coach Eck Monday if you say so, as I am old and can make a mistakes......:idunno:

I might be thinking of the K from the Highland's game. I don't keep a book so you're probably right. Just ask team statistician Jake Nordman for the book. He knows his stuff and will be glad to let you take a look.
Theoldguy Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Coach Eck was nice enough to let me copy the totals of the game book as my book was too wet to write into, and from his book it showed 5 hits and 2 doubles. Now I am not sure if the five hits were part of the two doubles, meaning a total of five hits or the five hits were singles and the two doubles mean a total of 7 hits. I didn't write down who the hits came off of so I can't answer your question. I will post the stats on the HHS vs CovCath thread later tonight.
Theoldguy Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Shumate gets the job done By Richard Skinner NKy.cincinnati.com It wasn't exactly an easy way for pitcher Adam Shumate to make his first varsity baseball appearance, but he came through like a veteran to help Covington Catholic hold off Scott on Saturday afternoon. Shumate, a sophomore right-hander who pitched on the junior varsity last season, entered Saturday's game with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the fifth inning and CovCath clinging to a 5-3 lead. He promptly induced a groundout to shortstop to end the threat. CovCath added three runs in the bottom of the inning and went on to win 9-4 at Tom Berger Field To read the rest of the story ---> Click here

If he can be a solid varsity pitcher this season that should really give CovCath good depth on the mound.
