Obviously you want to win just for the recognition and typically you would get a more favorable draw in the first round by drawing a runner-up. But in the end you still live to play another game no matter what happens.

Both are important, but the first round can have a great deal more pressure surrounding it. If you lose your season is over; if you win you have at least 2 more games.

I know last year GRC won the 40th district championship and when the regional draw came out Montgomery county had a cakewalk to the regional championship. I really dont think the district is that important.

It depends some on your region. I wouldn't want to be a runner-up in the 11th and have to face one of those champs in a 1st round region game.

It is absolutely, 100% more important to win the first round game than it is to win the championship because if you don't... your season is done.

 

It is possible to have a bad game in the District Finals and still recover to have a solid Regional run. Many teams have been District runners up only to turn around and win their Region.

 

I do agree that there are certain regions with very balanced teams 1 - 8, the outcome of the District Final is almost inconsequential other than for reasons of team and school pride. There are other regions like the 11th where the teams may be reasonably balanced, but no one wants to face Scott County, Lex Cath or other perennial powerhouses in the first round. This is also true in unbalanced regions like the 16th this season with a powerhouse like Elliott County that a District runner up does not want to face (at all... much less) in the opening round.

 

The bottom line... if you don't win the first round District game, none of the other stuff matters. :thumb:

Depends on the school I'd say. Some schools could not have the team to go deep in the region so in that case the District championship would be very important to them. But for a team like Holmes, Elliot etc. I don't think it means as much.

District Championship means very little...

 

There are times when District runner-ups get a better draw in the region. I can recall a few...

 

MC Napier (I think) beat Buckhorn in the district finals one year and many of the Buckhorn fans were upset, claiming they got cheated. Some of them were complaining to my dad and he told them he bet Napier's coach would give them the trophy if they could trade draws.

 

Napier drew Breathitt Co. in the regional opener, and the Bobcats that year had a great player who, unfortunately, wasn't committed to basketball that much (i.e., he wasn't in shape). To make a long story short, playing Breathitt Co. when they'd had a few days to rest was not a good thing that season.

 

Breathitt beat Napier to open the region. 2 or 3 days later they beat a good Lee Co. team on Friday night. On Saturday night, they played Buckhorn in the region final, raced out to a 17-point lead in the first quarter, the star player ran out of gas after playing the night before, and Buckhorn won the game by 20 points.

 

So, no, the district championship doesn't mean much and it's not even comparable in importance to the district opener. That's like asking a mid major or small conference in college hoops, which had you rather win? Your regular season conference title or the post-season tournament?

I think winning the district is more important some years than in others. It really depends on the quality of the rest of the region. Like this year in the 12th Region, the two teams from the 45th, 46th and 48th are all very solid. The two weakest will be from the 47th. So losing the district championship game might not be too bad for some, because they could get a winnable game in the first round with the 47th winner. Does that make sense?

Gonna be pretty darn important in the 33rd since if Ryle would happen to knock off Boone tonight, you could potentially see a first round Boone-Holmes matchup - clearly the top two teams in the 9th.
