February 23, 200917 yr Become this year's Corey Patterson? I am already having nightmares about the possibility. Dusty's comments below don't make me feel any better. "Jacque can play," Baker said. "He can play all three outfield positions. He can run. He hustles. He had a down year last year just like Gomes. But they have some track record of excellence. Just because you fall down for a while doesn't mean you're through, especially at the ages of those guys."

February 23, 200917 yr Author I doubt that Jocketty will give Dusty the opportunity to fulfill his ex-Cub fetish ... Then why sign him?
February 23, 200917 yr Then why sign him? He's cheap. And he's got experience. I don't know how much Jacque Jones will contribue this year, but I don't know if he'll be as bad as Patterson. If nothing else, he's a lot cheaper than CP23.
February 23, 200917 yr Author Insurance at Triple-A ... I bet he ends up on the Opening Day roster. Maybe his eye surgery will make him the player he was with the Twins, and make Jocketty look like a genius. Hey, if I can have nightmares, maybe I can have a fantasy as well.

February 23, 200917 yr I don't mind taking a chance on a deep discount ... :thumb: Same here. These are the types of signings that a small market team such as the Reds HAVE to make. It was obviously a mistake last year, but I didn't have a problem signing Corey Patterson either. I wasn't overly impressed with it, and was a little upset about the $3 million pricetag, but I think the idea was right.

Hey, if I can have nightmares, maybe I can have a fantasy as well. The Reds will keep five or six OFs, right? Dickerson, Taveras and Bruce are locks. They need a platoon partner for Dickerson (Gomes or Hairston or Hopper) and someone else that can play CF other than Bruce. Hairston or Hopper would fill that role. Or could Micah Owings figure in the picture somewhere? I suspect Jones will have to have a big spring to make it. Am I forgetting an outfielder somewhere?

Daryle Ward is a potential outfielder, although I think he'll be used at 1st base and as a Pinch hitter. Potentially could play a corner outfield spot, though.

February 23, 200917 yr Isn't he a pitcher? He's also quite a hitter ... I think the Reds would be wise to explore looking to utilize Owings' two-way talents.
February 23, 200917 yr Isn't he a pitcher? Yes, and is a great hitting pitcher. It's been rumored that Owings may be able to contribute somehow, but I don't think Jocketty and/or Dusty are counting on it. I'd be surprised if Owings even got a shot to play the field.

February 23, 200917 yr Some more points to make on Jones. At one time, he was the best CF in baseball that didn't play CF ... he was playing RF in Minnesota alongside Torii Hunter. Jones has never hit lefties and his power went south two years ago. He's 34 in April and at the age where most non-stars fade into oblivion. Chances are he isn't going to get any better.
