Hardwood12th Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Final from Lancaster. Good game from start to finish.
gchs_uk9 Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 This was a good ballgame. Garrard could never get over the hump. Mercer pushed the lead to 10 on several occasions and Garrard would immediately cut it to 4. Then it would push back out. The Lions got as close as two with a Hunter Hensley three-pointer and Mercer missed some foul shots down the stretch, but Garrard couldn't tie the game. Lions seem to be struggling a bit. Defense was suspect for the second consecutive game. I'm a little worried that Garrard's lack of depth is about to catch up with them. They still shoot the ball well enough to beat just about anyone, but the defense isn't as strong. The most important game for Garrard County is the district semifinal with Danville next Wednesday. If they can win, then they have the ability to make noise in the region. But they have to win.
AverageJoesGym Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Garrard is fading fast. It seems as if there is no favorite in the 12th at the moment. Even so this has to be the weakest overall that the 12th Region has been in many, many years. There are several decent, but not good--at least on a state level teams in the region. The 12th will be a double digit underdog in the Sweet 16. The Region seems to have lost relevance since the Laurel Co. teams left.

I don't know about fading fast, but there is a bit of fading going on. I still think they are capable of beating Danville (and anybody in the region, for that matter), but it's going to get tougher and tougher. I don't think the 12th winner will be a double-digit underdog in the state tournament, though, just because the winner plays the 14th Region. Hazard, Perry, and Knott are good, but they won't dominate the 12th representative.

Boyle and Lincoln have been pretty good since the realignment of the 12th regiion. I would argue that Lincoln would've been better than the "Laurel's" in three of the last four seasons, and are equal to them this year. As for Garrard, I think their lack of depth is catching up the them. Everyone in the area has played a difficult schedule the past couple of weeks, due to the ice storm. Garrard only plays 5 kids, so it has hurt them.
