South played an extremely good game. They really pressured the AC guards and made it hard for Anderson to get much going. Fultz was totally unstoppable but it wasn't enough. She went for 30 points and 10 rebounds. Davenport was in foul trouble the whole game and ended up fouling out very early in the 4th. Anderson had the lead until she left the game.

 

 

Give South credit. They played very hard and aggressive and certainly looked the the better team most of the night.

Doubly impressive when you consider that the three leading SOHS scorers were all freshmen - Mary Dye 17 pts / 10 reb., Jasmine Whitfield 14 points, and Emily Housley 12 points...

 

Leading scorer Jordann McGuffin - a junior - scored 9 for South.

 

With the girls' 8th Region at South Oldham, and this young team peaking as they are now, I think South has joined AC as the most likely team to challenge SK...

 

Regardless of what South does this year, they've served notice to the rest of the region for the next 2-3 years...

It was a very good game last night and I was very impressed with the play of the freshman for South. They are all capable of scoring which gives them lots of options. Stop one and someone else steps up. A luxury that South has not had for a few years. Fultz was held scoreless in the 3rd quarter - she had 18 at halftime and had a big 4th quarter scoring all her points after Davenport fouled out. She(Fultz) may not have missed a three point shot the entire game. She is a very nice player. Davenport never seemed to get into the flow of the game and fought foul trouble all night.

 

Makes the region conversation much more interesting to say the least.

Wouldn't this be considered an upset? I think I've seen both these teams play once each, and I wouldn't have seen this coming.

Probably a slight one, since Anderson was so highly regarded in the pre-season. But Anderson is in a bit of a late season tumble right now, with players leaving the team. Fultz and Davenport are really having to carry more of the load now than they might have expected...

 

On the other hand, perhaps it's not so much of a true upset. South is so freshman-heavy, it was difficult to tell how good they'll be in the pre-season. (we all knew Fultz, Davenport, and company) So we all make our best guesses and then wait and see. What we're seeing is a team that Coach Frank Wright has nurtured into a strong squad. All eleven players play every game, and now the top returning player from last year's region semi-finalists - Jordann McGuffin - was actually the #4 scorer for South in this game!

 

Even in the opening game of the season, South gave us all a hint of what might be to come when they took CAL to the wire at CAL...

Anderson hasn't lost anyone of consequence. They have only lost one varsity player and she didn't play hardly at all (the reason she left).

Really depends on what game you saw South play. They did not play all that well against Carroll and really only came alive in the last few minutes against Spencer, who sat back in a zone for most of the game. Anderson was by far the best I have seen them play and they are reeally starting to put things together as a team and have 5 starters who can all score and the subs that come in are pretty strong. With the loss of Reynolds for the season, one might of thought they would struggle, but they have played better without her IMO.

I was very imperseed with the JV from AC- I heard that they also had a 5th grader out there.....wow!!! They were composed and handled the ball very well.

 

Not to take anything away from AC but South does limit 2 of their better jv players to just 2 quarters per game and had another girl who has played the best for them as of late, who was hurt over the weekend, out with a knee injury that night. It was not a good showing for the South JV. Had South not dug such a deep hole in the first quarter- 11-0 or 16-0 ? before South even scored a field goal- maybe it would have been closer contest. Give AC credit, they came out and jumped on them early and South could never recover fully.

I saw South against Male. I was expecting a much better game but Male handled them rather easily. Granted that was about a month ago. I didn't realize they were depending on so many young players. In that light, it's not surprising they are continuing to improve.

Anderson JV's best player, another 7th grader, didn't play against South. That being said, S. Oldham and Anderson will be major impacts in the future.

That just really makes me wonder. I know these kids are really good but 4 middle school starters on the JV? Is Anderson girls hurting for numbers in the program? Have they been on the JV from the get go? South has some great young talent as well.

I think Yeaste is a pretty big loss... the others provided depth to a team that Kays thought would make them a very deep team this year...

 

You're right about the Anderson JVs...impressive lot. McKee being out didn't seem to hurt the JVs...although her absence certainly hurt the AC varsity.

 

You have to think these two schools will be two of the region 8 powers over the next few years. They may neither one win a title, but they will be definite contenders each season for the next 2-4 years.
