Al-Qaeda was certainly dangerous and its upending is welcomed, but they were more than lucky to have pulled off the attacks here, even while our back was turned. What specific action by Bush has stopped terrorist attacks here that would not have been previously stopped?

 

I have no idea and it may be years before we find out but you can bet your bottom dollar it's not a coincidence. There are inklings of discovered plots using the surveillance methods he's been blasted about.

It could be, certainly. It could be increased awareness on the part of local law enforcement. It could be that terrorists who wish to attack us don't have the means to - their best shot from the most organized and well funded group involved expired visas, boxcutters, unlocked cabin doors, and an unsuspecting populace. It could be more vigilant citizens. Simply pointing out that since 9.11 no attacks have occured and then pointing out that the President since 9.11 has been GW Bush is meaningless without evidence to connect them.

Not only is it overplayed it is simply wrong. Every American death in the Iraq is a price that we pay for Bush. It really doesn't matter to me that it is "over there" they are still our people and they aren't exactly safe.

I truly believe that the terrorists backed off after W's responses and subsequent programs as they knew a public opinion poll would not keep him from war if they struck first. Even if he were hated he was going to make decisions to keep us safe and free. Only time will tell if this belief is misguided.

 

If there are no attacks in the next 4 years, then we will know.

It may be paper thin but it is the best evidence of the conclusion.

 

Anyone who deals on a regular basis with law enforcement knows the impact that the Patriot Act and the Department of Homeland Security has had, both in finances and training and response, on federal, state, and local agencies. The inter-communication is light years ahead of what it was 10 years ago. And, of course, we have had several stories that the media has gotten a hold of of arrests made of would-be terrorists at airports and other locales, here in this country and worldwide.

 

I practiced criminal defense pre-911 and now post 9-11, and it is harder to plan, commit, and get away with high profile crime now than it was then.

I don't believe that a strong argument could be made that the war in Iraq was necessary for us to continue to be free. The commitment that our soldiers make to our country does not free our government to treat there lives as expendable for less than neccesary goals. I'm not a pacifist, and I'm not at all saying that our country shouldn't make necessary war. But this war was not neccesary, and in no way really defends our liberties.

What did Iraq have to with 9-11? I don't have an arguement against the efforts in Afghanistan, but Iraq was somthing entirely different.

There are over 4,000 US soldiers who have died in Iraq. 2,973 people died in the attacks on 9-11. Terrorist haven't backed off, we are still getting attacked, they just have a closer target. To say we haven't been attacked is "PLAYING WITH WORDS" it is not a reality. Furthermore specific actions as a result of the war has fueled the fire of our enemies.
