Bottom line most coaches don't feel the need to beat inferior teams by 30-40 every night but for some reason some coaches do. It will never change.

Yes, to me a press is an active, trapping defense. If you are being guarded full court and can't beat your man one on one then you've got issues; you may want to start with individual instruction. Many nights it's the only defense a smaller team has against larger teams, but nobody seems to care about that fact.

So it's okay in your opinion to use your "only defense against larger teams" when your up 30? Just want to be clear. I imagine that if I were a coach, I'd tend to have a long memory and sometimes that sort of thing can come back and bite you when you aren't the top team in the region. Good luck to the Lady Vikings the rest of the way.:thumb:

Again, it was not a press. RC doesn't play zone, so they played man to man...with freshmen and sophomores against the opposing teams starters. Is it fair to the younger kids to let other teams walk the ball up the floor and throw it into the post where you have absolutely no chance to defend it? Another thing you fail to realize is that many young kids audition for playing time in the closing minutes of games. Also, has RC just started pressing? Or, have they done it for YEARS? Seems like some programs would work to get better at it instead of always pointing the finger at teams when they know it's coming; seems to be a program philosophy to get after folks on defense. And whatever happened to teaching kids to play for 32 minutes? The younger kids are not supposed to play hard? RC took a lot of lumps in the past from the Rebecca Gray led Scott Co. teams and the North Hardin's to get an accurate gauge of what it takes to get to a high level of basketball. So don't act like RC hasn't been "bitten" before.

Russell has been doing fine for years. I think they put a 20 point loss on Rowan just a couple years back in the region. Dont worry Russell will work to get better.

Did anybody say it was unfair then? And Russell has a storied program with a very good, classy coach. They will be fine. Just don't denigrate another program for style of play.

Rowan has a great program. Just asked why press any team up by 32? Obviously it is to help younger kids learn how to press. :p:confused:

It wasn't a press...but I think that RC will continue to play an aggressive man to man. And, I was there, but I recall Rowan playing solid 1/2 court man for at least the last 4 minutes....?!

So, help me define press then, and for the record I could care less what defense was played for how long with any score, but I have to ask,,,,,what the heck do you consider a press then? Does it have to be zone, not man? Is there no such thing as full court man press? Does it have to include jump traps? Just want to be clear so I can identify in the future if I'm down 30 and my kids are being "guarded" the full length of the floor if I should run our press break or our full court man offense.

No dog in this fight but to me a press is anytime the team on defense picks up the offensive team in the back court. Zone or Man, Token pressure or intense pressure.:deadhorse:

Regardless of what the experts think on here, there is a difference between straight man and a F/C press.

LOL - love the quote about "illegal use of hands" - this is like the 5th year in a row I've read these complaints on here. I think it's safe to say Rowan ain't gonna change because inferior programs lack the ability to handle it or coach it.

Didn't see a complaint here, just a suggestion. By the way, were you at WKU last year when they lost to Breathitt Co. because of "illegal use of hands" ?

Spindoc, I don't think they are going to let you get the last word on the definition of defense !

Not sure if high school made the change or not but in college the point of emphasis was changed and anytime a player puts two hands on an opponent it is considered a foul. With that said I have already noticed in the college game that the officials are not calling that as much as they did in the beginning of the season.

There's also a point of emphasis on post play and dislodging defenders.

As far as WKU and Breathitt was concerned, that's a perfect illustration of my point...smaller, pressing teams are at a disadvantage when the game is called tightly on the perimeter, and they "let them play" in the post. And, I think the "L" had more to do with shooting 28% than it did anything else.

Your % usually drops either when the defense is better or your starters are on the bench in foul trouble.

Were you there? RC had a 7 pt lead in the 3rd, and went cold. Continued to get the same looks, they just didn't go down. As far as foul trouble that wasn't a problem. Might have been the fact that the legs went a little dead after playing the semis on Sunday, the finals on Monday, traveling on Tuesday and playing early on Wednesday? Ever thought about that?
