How do non-home schooled students parents have any more say in the the way that public schools are funded than anyone else? Again, I'm not trying to be argumentative, just curious.

I never said that they do. What I am saying is the fact that the school may not get money from the state because a home schooled player attends no classes is not the fault of the home schooled player or his/her parents. They have no control over how the state decides to fund its public schools.

If the public school district has failed in terms of academics, why should the kid be penalized?

 

It is a tragedy enough that low-income parents have no other choices that schools that don't accurately reflect what they would like their kids to learn. I don't understand why the kids deserved to be penalized for the failures of others.

I can't disagree with that. But that's a political issue- and why I support school vouchers.

I wonder though....if a voucher was used to transfer a student to a better performing school academically (but not athletically), could a case then be made to allow the student to attend classes at one school while playing sports within their district? I don't like the idea....

In the football thread that parallels this one, I said yes, in their district. In open enrollment districts like Jefferson County, I explained the "resides" policy. I said that I thought that if a child was homeschooled, they should be able to play at the school that is their assigned "resides" school.

Please no one else respond to that as I was just playing with RM from many other discussions. It was not meant to be a serious point to anyone else for any true discussion.

Would it change anyone's mind if we were talking about elementary or middle school students? Would it be a problem if a fifth grade homeschooled student played on his or her local public school basketball team?

 

Why is high school any different? Are we once again going to let overly-competitive adults ruin the chance for a kid to participate in athletics? I doubt many kids would get upset over the prospect of a homeschooler playing sports at their public high school.

 

Maybe the KHSAA needs to be quizzed on their own published set of values found in their current strategic plan (2007-2011)...

That should be up to the private school but I doubt that private schools would be interested in allowing home schooled students join their teams. The parents of home schooled students are not compelled by the government to support private schools in their neighborhood, so they do not own a stake in those schools.
