It's a cold gym, but there is heat. Unfortunately, the gym isn't well insulated. Truth be told, I don't find the gym uncomfortable at all, but many people complain of it being cold. The locker rooms, however, ARE cold.

 

As for the floor, that's just plain wrong. The floor is in fine shape. Someone on this thread indicated that they thought it looked slick. It isn't.

 

 

The floor could use a refinishing that is for sure along with the replacement of a few boards, there are some definite dead spots. I have seen the floor slick at times as well but that is just a matter of keeping it swept. Also, it is extremely cold in there. You know that when you see fans in the stands with blankets- no joke!

Like most old gyms, there are only two locker rooms. One of the old locker rooms is not used right now.

 

Anderson actually was directed to classrooms in the Buckner Alternative School.

 

The Oldham boys also did not use a locker room. They had the worst "digs" of the night, one of the old utility rooms behind the stands.

 

The Oldham girls were the only ones to use an actual locker room.

Also, it is extremely cold in there. You know that when you see fans in the stands with blankets- no joke!

I know this question wasn't directed at me, but Im gonna answer it anyway. haha.

 

 

As far as the 8th region goes, Brown and Mckee are two of the very best young kids. I would put them up there with jasmine whitfield of South. Mckee may not be quite to the level of whitfield yet, but she's also two years younger. Wells from Shelby (8th grade) is a nice player as well, but prolly a step below these three. Anderson and Shelby's 8th grade team played over the summer and Anderson came out the victor (and they didn't have Cann or Mckee playing). That gives you an idea about the depth of young talent for AC. IMO, AC may be set up for a 3 or 4 year run similar to some of the Shelby runs of the past. When the current group of 7th graders (Cann and Mckee) enter High school they will be ready to win right away (especially with Brown in the middle as a Junior).

I would agree that Brown and McKee are two of the best young players I've seen in the 8th this year.

 

Of the youngsters I've followed / seen closely, I would put Owen's Gayheart at the very top of my list...

 

Rianna Gayheart (Owen County) freshman - pure scorer. Could lead the 8th region in scoring average for 4 years if she keeps it up...

Sydney Brown (Anderson County) freshman - amazingly nimble, she moves well, and has tremendous moves to the basket, using either hand. Oldham County had no answer for her the other night.

Tori Wilhoit (Williamstown) sophomore - capable of a double-double every night.

Kelli Dixon (Walton-Verona) sophomore - haven't seen Kelli this year, but she had a great freshman season as a starting forward, complementing Hargett with 10 ppg and 7 reb.

Jasmine Whitfield (South Oldham) freshman - tall and great arm span. Aggressive player who has the ability to shoot from very deep. Dangerous defensively in the open court.

Eriel McKee (Anderson County) freshman - amazing, natural moves. Very quick. Seems to have great instincts, which shouldn't be surprising, considering her older siblings (Eric and Erin McKee).

Nicole Bryant (North Oldham) freshman - leads team in scoring. Great ability to slash to the basket.

Hannah Devine (Carroll Co) - freshman - haven't seen her yet this season, but hear she's doing well. She was the first off the bench last year as an 8th grader.

Emily Melton (Oldham County) freshman - hot three point shooter; excellent ballhandler. Heir apparent to Audir Beaudrie at OCHS.

 

Of the bunch, I'd say only Whitfield has shown me significant defensive skills, but then again, Whitfield is currently not quite the natural scorer some of the others are, although she is the #2 scorer on the South Oldham team.

 

There is still a lot of youngsters I haven't seen and am looking forward to seeing. This seems like a very "young" year for the region, and I still think the youngsters may hold the key to the title. Especially at Anderson, where the Lady Bearcats seem to be the biggest threat to SK. Brown and McKee could be pivotal; they were on Friday.

 

Gallatin County, Eminence, Trimble County, and Carroll County are all young. Gallatin didn't have a single senior last year; their team was 4 juniors, 1 sophomore, and a load of freshmen. Trimble is half freshmen or below this year. Eminence is brutally young. And Carroll started (last year) two juniors, one senior, a sophomore and a freshman. Oldham County has just two seniors, Beaudrie and a little-used senior backup guard. Five of South Oldham's 11 roster spots are freshmen.

 

Haven't seen Ailiyah Wells, the talented 8th grader, play for Shelby yet, although I've seen Shelby play once. (saw them in December, before Wells joined the team from her MS squad)

 

If MS success is any predictor - and unfortunately, it often is not - then South Oldham will be in the mix for the next three years or so. Their current freshman class was very successful in MS...

I have seen whitfield, she's impressive. Also, melton is a nice shooter. I saw gayheart last year, I'm sure she's Improved. Like you said, the 8th will be fun to watch the next few seasons.

I agree that none are complete players and rightly so since they are just freshman. Defense is tough for players at this age as they are transitioning from middle school.
