Oldham County 58 South Oldham 57 (2 OT)

Featured Replies

Oldham County Freshman Emily Melton hit a 15 footer from straightaway to send the game into OT, tied at 47. Lady Colonels took a 52-49 lead on Emily Lape's FT, but she missed the second of two, and Jordann McGuffin of South nailed a three from the deep, deep left corner with a defender flying in her fact at the buzzer to earn the second OT.

With 12 seconds left in the second OT, Oldham had the ball trailing, 57-55. Audri Beaudrie missed a three, but OC's Emily Lape and SO's Jordann McGuffin were called for a held ball. After considerable discussion among the refs, 1.3 seconds was put on the clock. Oldham got the ball on the alternating possession arrow. The throw came in to Beaudrie, who took one dribble and nailed a three to win the game, 58-57.

Three buzzer-beating shots...

Very intense, exciting, hard-fought game, though not always pretty. Then again, rivalry games rarely are. South led most of regulation, but never by more than 8. Oldham's biggest lead was three.

Perhaps the most exciting girls' basketball game I've seen in some time...

Lape led Oldham with 15; Beaudrie had 13. Both had big second halves; Lape had 13 of her 15 in the 2H and Beaudrie had 9 of her 13 in the 2H. Ericka Hardin and Brooke Leanheart each had 10 as Oldham had balanced scoring. McGuffin led South with 15.

South struggled with turnovers (unofficially 29); Oldham struggled at the line, hitting just 12 of 30 FTs.

Interesting match-up. , congrats to Oldham Co.

Oldham Co. appears to be in the driver's seat for the crown, as the district looks to be down considerably from the past few seasons.

Not sure I would use this game as your guide for the district title. Yes Oldham won but it was on their floor with crazy, questionable call to put time back on the clock. Should not have happened as the officials were pulling a number out of the air. Per the radio should have only been .2 seconds not 1.3 or 2.0 seconds - big differenece there. Anyway, a game like this does not give us any more indication come district time. Neither team was dominant or all that impressive IMO. If we follow history, the last two years, the regular season winner between these two has not become the district champ. South Oldham has got to learn to manage the end of the game better. Several bad shots along with some unforced key turnovers, cost them this one.

Hats off to Oldham, they hit the big shots when they needed to and capitalized off South's miscues.

I would agree with crazy8s. My best guess was that a minimum of 0.2 seconds should have been showing on the clock - it was just ticking under 0.5 as the held ball signal was given and I had perhaps the best seat in the house to see the shot, rebound, and the clock at the same time - but the officials definitely weren't sure. Like Crazy8s said, it's a big difference between 1.3 seconds and 0.5 - 0.2. Then again, I'm sure Larry Just would have been telling his OC players that any inbounds play had to be a "catch and shoot" play. Who knows whether it would have made a difference.

Interestingly, the final play was probably the best South had defended an out of bounds play under the basket all night, IMO. Oldham had repeatedly gotten easy layups in several similar situations all night long. Beaudrie's winner came under extreme duress.

In any case, the final result doesn't take away from the all-out play by both teams, the big shots by Melton, Beaudrie, and McGuffin, and the hustle we saw all night. Not pretty by any stretch - two teams that are definitely still "works in progress" - but great entertainment for the fans.

Oldham has to shoot FTs better...South has to take better care of the ball...but in the end, crazy8s comment was dead-on: South probably wins this game with good time management in the final 3:00.

And crazy8s is right...past experience has shown the winner of the regular season game has often lost in the 29th tournament to the other team (as happened last year, when South won the regular season game by 12, but lost to OC in the 29th final by 3.)

Oldham, however, is now a heavy favorite to get the #1 seed. The only way the Lady Colonels cannot finish as the #1 seed going into the tourney is if North beats both Oldham County and Trimble County. Both Trimble and South can still finish 2-1 and tie Oldham in the standings (if OC loses to North), but both cannot finish 2-1 (as South plays Trimble on Saturday), and neither can beat Oldham in a head-to-head tiebreaker. So it's either going to be Oldham or North as the #1 seed, and I'd say Oldham would be the heavy favorite.

Keep in mind - when the tournament is played - that Trimble led Oldham County for most of their game before losing late, 49-42. The district is full of four rebuilding, young teams. It's truly wide-open.

The 29th District - which was supposed to be at North Oldham this year - will instead be at Oldham County, as the new North Oldham gym will not be completed in time. The current North Oldham gym is an old MS gym, with bleachers on just one side. Way too small for a district tourney. My understanding is that North will then take Oldham's spot in the rotation as host for 2010.

I cannot see North beating either Oldham or Trimble so Oldham will be the number one and South the number 2 - either way, they(Oldham & South) will meet again for the district championship. Should Trimble lose to North and they bacome the number 4 seed, it will be very interesting to see if they can pull the upset over Oldham. I can see that possibly happening especially since Trimble played them so close although they played Oldham at home which is an advantage for them for sure.

Your comments are right on Colonel Mike!

Wasn't at the game, but the clock is huge... I believe anything under .6 has to be a tip in. When was the last time you saw a girl do that?

You're thinking NCAA rules. I don't believe the KHSAA has a rule similar to that. And in the NCAA, I believe it's 0.2 or less that has to be a tip-in.

0.6 is a lot longer than you think.

Someone may correct me here, but I'm fairly certain that is correct.
