Rules Question

Featured Replies

Absolutely not correct. As a courstesy the officials normally try to make sure players are lined up properly. It is NOT the officials job to COACH. If the DEFENSIVE player does NOT occupy the bottom spot................it IS a violation on the defensive team. If the shot is missed.....it will be awarded again. When the OFFENSIVE player occupies the spot it is a viloation on the offensive team. This makes it a double violation. The DEFENSE MUST and the OFFENSE CANNOT. Nothing else really matters. Nothing to correct. This is NOT my opinion---------it is the RULE. Too bad this happened in such a close game.

This is exactly the correct interpretation of the rule. It is no different than if a team has 6 players on the floor. Officials try everything they can to count after each sub, but if they miss one-- the responsibility is on the player(s). Otherwise we'd just stop and get the player off the floor.

With the free throw situation, we do not have sufficient information to determine if or what kind of a foul should have or should not have been called. Obviously the defensive player is at fault for not occupying the lower lane space, and this is an item that has happened over and over this year as they've moved up the lane.

:madman:As much as I hate to say it, Madman is correct. There are only three correctable errors and all relate to free throws.

I meant they all relate to awarding free throws.

Its hard for me to imagine that the situation in the OP was "excuse me, young lady, we seem to have lost our minds and are in the wrong slots. Do you mind if we switch?" I'd bet that its more of a case of the defensive player realizing her mistake and then to some extent forcefully moving the offensive player. In my mind the offensive player did not move out of the space of her own volition.

Are you sure there are only 3?

A. Failing to award a merited free throw

B. Awarding an unmerited free throw

C. Permitting a wrong player to attempt a free throw

D. Permitting a player to attempt a free throw at the wrong basket

E. Erroneously counting or cancelling a score.

The latter two (D&E) are more administrative, therefore not commonly included.

These must be caught before the ball goes dead and becomes live again (i.e. a made basket the ball is dead and then is live when at the disposal of the player throwing the ball in).

For the foul, if the ball is in the hands of the shooter, you cannot call a Technical, because the ball is in play. You can have a common foul or, if warranted, an intentional or flagrant.

It depends on what it took to move the player. I've seen many cases where contestants line up wrong and move each other with a little hand on the hip to the right spot. However in your description, if a player forcefully moves another then something should be called.

Is it now illegal for the offensive team to keep four players back on D, and leave the lane empty?

Is it now illegal for the offensive team to keep four players back on D, and leave the lane empty?

No. The only requirement is that the bottom spot on each side be filled by the non-shooting team.

No, the only lane positions that MUST be occupied are the two lower spots (now the spots adjacent to, just above the blocks) and these MUST be occupied by opponents of the shooter, in otherwords the defensive team.

Thanks guys, for the clarification.:thumb:

So the "old school" approach of the bottom spot being left open so the offensive player took the spot is actually a lane violation? I have never heard this but thanks for the info. Looks like "being smart" and taking the spot was actually an illegal and dumb move. Thanks

The bottom slot has always been required to be occupied. The only thing new is that the bottom slot is now one spot higher.

Please don`t confuse him. What I bellieve he was referring to was that the bottom spot was left open by the defense and the OFFENSE may NOT occupy. Yes BufordT ....you are welcome
