Southwestern is pretty good but they don't play anyone very good so you don't really know how good they are. I saw them as 8th graders last year and they were impressive but they looked really old. I assume that most of them have stayed back. If so, they are really sophomores playing agaist freshman, age wise, so they may not improve like some of the other teams will. They probably are the best team in the 12th but are they as good as advertised? Time will tell.

I don't think you are giving them a fair assessment if you are just judging them by their record. This is a freshman team that has never really played together, and they are playing in a new system. Three of the kids who started on the 8th grade team last year are not with this team. This team will struggle this year to find points, but they are improving. I beleive Coach Daniel is looking at the big picture (player development) and is not focused on how many games they win in a developmental league. In HS there is only one record that matters.

If they put Townsend on the team and brought up some of the 8th graders for support, there is no doubt in my mind that the Jumpers could have the best freshman team in the region. Coach Daniels is actually coach the freshman team himself to make sure they are getting the proper coaching. He sees as do I the potential the younger kids have. The future is very bright for the Jumpers.

Who has the best freshman team in the 12th? I'm not sure about anyone else but Southwestern is yet to be beaten this year. from the start of their 6th grade year they are 65-5. and they are 4-0 this year.

If they put Townsend on the team and brought up some of the 8th graders for support, there is no doubt in my mind that the Jumpers could have the best freshman team in the region. Coach Daniels is actually coach the freshman team himself to make sure they are getting the proper coaching. He sees as do I the potential the younger kids have. The future is very bright for the Jumpers.

Your comments seem to ignore the freshman playing and want to focus on the one freshman playing up (Townsend), one eighth grader playing (Gover) and some kids still in MS (not playing Freshman yet). Alex and Taylor G are doing a good job leading the freshman team. Nate, Taylor S, Jarrod, and Austin are improving. From what I have observed there is not any other eighth graders who besides Spencer who could actually help. But then he would take minutes from his brother. The way it is now both are maximizing their minutes. Also Alex, Jarrod, Taylor and Austin are getting valuable playing time. One thing Coach says is you don't know which little duckling will become the next "Swann" of the group. (Physical growth, maturity, desire and opportunity all factors in development)

I agree with this assessment whole heartedly. I look forward to playing these boys again when our freshmen have caught up with them physically in another year or so. Our jv team had no problems with the Southwestern jv team. I'd like to think that as time goes on and our boys physically mature and continue growing that they will be able to beat the 65-5 team.

They're getting better the more they play together. I'm Taylor S's Dad and honestly this is the first time he and Alex have had much of an offensive load placed on them. That isn't a knock on the Middle School program it's just that as 7th Graders they had Taylor Gover and Townsend both on the team to lead the offense and they were there more for defense and rebounding. I know that Taylor's forte is still defense, rebounding, setting picks and diving on the floor type stuff and he's perfectly content with that as he has more of a football mentality anyway. However, he has really learned a lot so far this season and is starting to develop into more of a post threat and Alex is starting to drive to the basket more where in the past he usually just shot 3's. Overall I know that the kids have really enjoyed working with Coach Daniel. They're in better shape than they've ever been in and they have definately learned a lot about fundamental defense--they had always played some form of zone before. Their record may not end up being that great this seaon but what they learn this season may allow more than just Lange and Gover to play and help out down the road.

If I miss interpreted what you were saying I do apologize. As I read those sections in your statement it just seems to me you seem to be focused in a particular area. My Bad. Just making sure we are not putting the cart before the mule. There are 3 or 4 kids besides Townsend in that freshman group that may end of being contributors in a couple of years to the varsity program. If not hopefully Spencer, Tyler, Sunshine or some other eighth grader is ready to step up. I excluded Gover on purpose he is already dressing Varsity.

The Epperson brothers are the only ones that has been held back. But why are you complaining? I'm sure you have some players that possibly have or could have been held back. There's nothing illegal about it. I'm sure Southwestern isn't the only school that have players that have been held back. And yes they have played some good competition. This past Saturday they played in a round robin at West Jessamine High School and played Bryan Station in the first game and in the second game they played West Jessamine. Neither one of them teams are a bad ball team. West played the Warriors tough. So whenever it is we play your team you can come see that they are better than advertised.

It isn't illegal but weren't Marlowe, Lewis and Williams also held back during Middle School? It was more than just the Eppersons. If they weren't then they didn't play one of the years. They've got a fine team--I'm not trying to detract from that. I really like most of those kids but in 6th grade Meece beat them handily twice and the next year almost their whole 7th grade team held back. After that they beat Meece twice in 7th grade and 4 times last season--although 2 of the wins last year were by 3 points or less.

I think you guys are having a misunderstanding on what the other one means. From what I can tell you are both on the same page. I know that you won't find a bigger Somerset supporter than either one of you two--well, maybe outside of me. :thumb:
