Nothing wrong with school spirit. As long as it remains in the stands. The playing floor should be reserved for ten players and two or three officials. I know you can say as long as they stay off the playing floor and just on the sideline...... And then they start inching forward.....and then they are three inches on the floor and then six and then a foot. Here's the next thing that happens : Little Suzy goes down towards the corner and runs into a student that is showing school spirit and poor judgement. Little Suzy ends up with an injury from the collision with student showing spirit. Gets real interesting now...... Little Suzy's Dad is coming out of the stands cause his baby girl is hurt....... See where this can only go downhill in a hurry ? Cheer all you want to... Just keep it in the stands and leave the floor to the players.

 

And I would assume Suzys dad is gonna want to seek legal action against the school for failing to control their crowd. This is a possibilty.

Exactly ! All kinds of bad possiabilities. I can see where a near riot situation could easily occur there. Wasn't there just a trial held in Fleming County where someone was assaulted at a baseball or softball game ? School spirit is great, just keep it in the stands. Why invite all the risks ?

I've attended some Fleming games where the visiting coach actually had to stand with the Fleming fans (at the baseline) because they were saying some unsportsmanlike things to the players. Also the Fleming Fans at times are less than a foot from the playing floor. If the players are doing layup drills then their momentum will most likely take them out-of-bounds and into possible contact with the fans. Not a good situation. I agree that this should not be allowed. There are better ways to show fan support.

I've never ever seen the visiting coach go stand in front of the student section, the student section is on the complete opposite side of the court, and on the opposite baseline, compared to the visitors bench.

I've seen it twice. One of the assistant coaches in the 16th region even commented to me about how he had to do just this. And yes, you are correct that the coaches had to walk to the other end of the gym to get to the baseline where the fans were standing.

I know student section is over but i have to put my word in. The Ref's do tell us to stay back. We stay atleast two feet back. We are behind the black line and the Refs say that's ok. Oh and if the student section wasn't there "little Suzy" might run her face into a brick wall or worse.

I dont remember any brick walls in the gym. Where are they? I have to agree with BDB. The students need to stay off the floor. Cheer your team on all you want but the floor is for the players and refs. No matter if your 2 feet behind the line or not. Example#1 You dont see the entire floor surrounded by fans standing 2 feet behind the lines do you? Example #2 The fans at Duke are really close to the floor but they are standing in front of their seats, not on the floor.

Is Fleming County still letting half the student body on the floor during a ball game ? This is one of the craziest things I've seen let go on in high school basketball. Encouraged by the coach, allowed by the administration, and rarely enforced by the officials. Can't help but think of all the bad scenarios that could take place.
