Holmes 67 Beechwood 48

Featured Replies

Beechwood has a 6' 7" kid? .

Its AJ Smith who is better known as a pitcher. I heard he came out this year and will be a huge asset for BW.

Well, closer than I predicted and expected, but it's the first game so I'm not too upset. I would just like to start out by saying that Pittman is HUGE. My jaw literally dropped when I saw how big he had gotten since I had seen him last year. Anyways..

Holmes: Overall pretty solid performance. Ricardo Johnson, while he probably didn't have one of his better games, still put up around 10 and his presence on the floor was much needed for Holmes. I love his attitude [and his brothers for that matter]. When he fouled and it was maybe a bit controversial as to whether he did, he did not argue, he handed the ref the ball and went down the court and did the "its ok" sign. Really great to see a kid like that, and it really shows what type of player he is. Jamel Riley is the real deal. I haven't seen every PG in the 9th or even in NKY but if there is one better, I'll be VERY surprised and impressed. He did not miss a shot and he took control when he needed to. I was disappointed he didn't shoot more in the second half in fact.

After their first six though, they have a drop off in talent and that will hurt them this year. They have little depth off the bench, and besides Arnold it was pretty obvious that there needs to be a lot more development. And Holmes REALLY needs to work on rebounding and following the shot. There were a few times instances where a player took a shot and watched it as opposed to following it in.

As for Beechwood, well I'm really impressed they hung in there as long as they did. Beautells [i did not spell that right did I lol] was a good PG for them, but he needs to watch his pushoffs. He did not get called for them tonight, but he will somewhere down the road and it may be a hard habit for him to break as he did it almost every time. He had a really good shot though. Romes, while getting his 16 points, was literally shut down in the first half almost, with only 1 point. He was frustrated by Ricardo's defense and it showed, he played a bit scared. Most of his points were breakaway easy layups, but I did not see the top 10 player everyone has talked about. AJ Smith inside had some nice size on him. He also needs to watch his pushing down low, there is a point where it's not just bodying up, it's flagrant pushing around and it's not going to fly for a lot of ref's, and I believe he and the guy he was guarding got called out on it a few times tonight. Throwing it inside over the defenders head was a nice idea though.

Fun game to watch!

How did Dom Johnson and Housley play.

I'd say Beechwood did a good job of getting Ricardo JJ and Pittman in foul trouble. IMO Holmes lacks defensive intensity like they got from Arrez and Avery last season.

Pittman was the only one in foul trouble. Neither Ricardo or JJ were in foul trouble and both finished with only 2 fouls. JJ probably played more than any other starter. He played very well offensively and defensively tonight.

As far as Holmes lacking defensive intensity, I would exactly say that. Anyone who was at the game knows Beechwood had to work for EVERY point they got and Holmes did hold them under 50. I'd say they picked up where they left off.

Housely actually played a very solid game. Those who said he was a selfish player were way off base. He played great defense and probably only took 5 shots and finished with around 8 points. He will be a nice addition for Holmes this year.

Dom played very good defensively but seems to try and do too much offensively and had a few turnovers. He is still a solid player though. He just needs to realize he is needed defensively...not offensively.

I meant the first half. The second half they stayed on the floor, but I believe Beechwood only used 1 sub. Need a bench to be successful.

Now that you mention it, youre right lol. Beechwood subbed someone in for Romes at one point, literally 10 seconds later he was back in.

Both teams did not have much of a bench though.

Pittman was the only one in foul trouble first half too.

Neither Johnson Brothers were ever in foul trouble. Those two, along with Housely and Riley played very solid defensively. Pittman was the only one in foul trouble and even his second foul in the first half was VERY questionable.

I remember very vividly both Johnson brothers having 2 fouls each in the first half. J.J. on a charge and then the very next play fouling Smith. Ricardo held Romes on a rebound and got a called for a block.

Didn't you say you weren't there at the game?

JJ did pick up two quick fouls back to back but I believe both came right before the half. Johnson had one foul in the first half and one in the second.

How would I know Romes 3 was in the first half and the halftime score? I can't wait for Holmes vs Scott County though.

I'm glad that Riley is getting some recognition! I saw him play several times this summer and he is almost always lights out. He also has great poise and can control a game.

From nky.com:

Senior guard Jamel Riley scored a game-high 22 points to lead top-ranked Holmes in its first win of the season. Riley went 9-of-11 from the field, including 4-for-4 from beyond the 3-point arc, and had four assists and four steals.

Jeremiah Johnson contributed to the Bulldogs' win with 15 points. The junior forward also pulled down eight rebounds.

Trey Beuttel led Beechwood with 18 points, including four 3-pointers.

Beechwood (0-1) - Beuttel 7 0 18, Romes 7 1 16, Hall 0 4 4, Smith 2 2 6, Snyder 1 1 3, Pohlgeers 0 1 1. Totals: 17 9 48.

AJ Smith. He is a VERY big kid. I'd say he's every bit of 6'7. He was as big as Pittman, if not a little bit bigger.

Yea, I went to the game not expecting to see anyone that tall on Beechwood's team. I think I read somewhere on here that their tallest player was 6'3"? He is every bit as tall as Elijah, if not taller. BTW, did you see the play, I think it was mid-late 3rd quarter when #10 for Beechwood got the ball underneath and got Elijah to jump? I coulda swore his hand was about 3-4" away from the top of the backboard. It might of been my angle, I was sitting pretty high up.

Yea Elijah can get up there. He was measured at a camp as having a 7 foot wingspan. Scary thing is he'll likely get bigger over the next year.
