I'm not a DeSales fan, but I think you're underestimating the teams the Colts played. Not saying they had a stronger schedule mind you, but they hardly played patsies. Their two losses were to a ranked 5A team (Doss) and to a powerful Providence, IN squad. They beat a couple of solid 4A teams - Fairdale and Bullitt East, and one of the better 1A teams (Louisville) Holy Cross.

 

Mark Sander is one of the most unsung coaches in the state.

WHAT TO WATCH: DeSales is a run-first team that likes to spread around its carries. Five players average at least four carries a game, but no player averages more than nine carries a game. Running back Andrew Beeler is the closest thing DeSales has to a workhorse. He's carried the ball just 102 times for 592 yards.

 

WHAT'S NEXT: The winner will advance to play either Newport Central Catholic or Lloyd in the regional finals.

 

BOTTOM LINE: Newport, Northern Kentucky's No. 4 seed in 2A, kept things close with top seed DeSales in the first round. Don't be surprised if the Indians pull the upset.
