For everyone that still want to blame the 6 class system. Were there ANY 4 team districts when we had 4 classes? Were there any losing teams or 0-fer teams when there were 4 classes?

I may well have missed it, but it looks like there were 5 total that had either 1 or 2 wins on the season in the cumulative 3 years. there were no o'fer teams. How many teams this year have between 0-2 wins only?

Strength of schedules and differences in quality of football make it a nightmare to try any statewide or even region wide ranking system. I always prefer things being decided on the field and would err on the side of letting a 1 win team in versus excluding a 6 win team because they did not get enough points in some ranking system. Here is an idea I just thought of. Keep everything as is but make a requirement of say 2 wins in your class to qualify for the playoffs. If a team in a 4 team district is not able to get the 2 wins in their class, then you go to other districts where teams qualified and let them fill their slot. If somehow there aren't 32 qualified teams, some #1 seed get first round byes. That takes your 0 and 1 win teams out of the playoffs and promotes regular season games within classes.

 

The SOS works in other states. I honestly believe that you can still get to the "right" State Champion and have better playoff football. It works across the river quite nicely.

It's not a good system. Too many teams with not enough wins, but not all teams. Too many games in Round 1 decided by wide margins, 53% by more than 30 points. Several 0 and 1 win teams in while 5-5 teams stay home.

District play, I think, is the fly in the ointment. By that I mean only district records count. Several teams in the state qualify just by showing up at 10 games.

 

I think if you want 32 teams in each division, then take to top 32 teams. Either take the top 8 in each region, or top 16 in each semi-state. Seed them and playoff.

I add this because thanks to fox college sports I have been able to watch some games from there during the regualr season along with all of their state finals.

 

PLAYOFF PROCEDURES

1. THE WIAA FOOTBALL PLAYOFF FIELD SHALL CONSIST OF 224 TEAMS. TEAMS WHO MEET THE FOLLOWING

CRITERIA RECEIVE PLAYOFF CONSIDERATION:

a. Champions of approved WIAA conferences, including divisional champions within a conference approved by the

WIAA, with a winning record in conference games, minimum five conference games.

b. Teams with a winning record (above .500) in conference games only.

c. Teams without WIAA conference affiliation, playing an independent schedule against approved competition that win a

minimum of six varsity games.

Note: 1. Teams that voluntarily withdraw from a conference shall be ineligible for football playoff consideration the

next four school years.

2. Teams which have voluntarily withdrawn from a conference will not be seeded in the playoff series.

d. Teams with a winning conference record, or champions of a non-WIAA conference, playing a minimum of five conference

games.

Note: The WIAA Board of Control has given final authority to the WIAA Executive Staff to make necessary determinations

in football playoff qualifying procedures in unique situations in order to preserve conference affiliation

and to resolve all issues of concern in a manner which serves the greater interest of the membership and

the football playoff series.

Qualifying Criteria If Steps 1, a-d Total Less Than 224 Teams

If the number of teams qualifying under steps a-d (above .500 conference record) is less than 224, the balance of the

2. TOURNAMENT PLACEMENT AND PAIRING PROCEDURES, DIVISION DETERMINATION

a. The 224 teams in the football playoff field will be grouped by enrollment, largest to smallest on the basis of the enrollment

indicated in the 2008-2009 WIAA DIRECTORY OF MEMBER SCHOOLS. Cooperative teams will be listed on

the basis of the enrollment of both schools. There will be seven divisions with 32 teams in each division.

Note: When a playoff division cutoff involves schools with the same enrollment, the enrollment of the third week in

September of the current school year will be used to break the tie.

b. Each 32 team division will be divided into four geographical sections (A, B, C, D) of 8 teams each with priority given

to having an equal number of conference champions in each section.

In addition, undefeated conference champions (8-0, 9-0) will be identified. An attempt to equitably divide them throughout

the geographical groupings shall be made.

Note 1: Once the playoff field is finalized no additions or substitutions to the field will be made. If a disqualifying violation

is confirmed the offending school will be removed from the field and the highest seeded team will be

given a first round bye.

Note: 2: If a disqualifying violation is confirmed after brackets have been announced, the opponent of the disqualified

team shall advance regardless of their bracket position and no other adjustments shall be made within the

bracket.

c. Tournament placement in the football playoffs is not seeding in the true sense of the word (1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, etc.).

In each eight team grouping, only four teams will be "seeded" 1-4, determined in the following order of criteria:

They have six div. and about 450 teams playing football.

To me any system that allows a 0-10,1-9,2-8,3-7 to get in the playoffs every year is not a good syatem. I will include 4-6 in that group to.

I happen to like the Ohio system. I also like the neutral sites for games after the first round. It sure helps cut down on on travel difficulties and teams usually wind up playing at some pretty nice venues. How many hours do you think CovCath (and now Highlands) will spend on a bus to JC? MSU would have been a nice meeting place!
