Although they have a tough game ahead of them with Hoptown! At least they're at home.

It's amazing just how far and fast Warren Central has fallen. This team had gone to their 4th straight region title game 2 years ago, played in the state semis 3 years ago. Before last year I'd have never envisioned a game in which Warren Central would only win by one TD against Grayson County. I certainly would never have envisioned that they could actually lose to the Cougars.

Probably somewhat. But the Dragon hoops team had a losing record and a first round district loss last year.

Not a great performance by the Dragons Friday night, by any stretch. I never would have thought that they would ever lose to Grayson County. But, two or three years after WC reached the state semis in 93 they only won 2 games and lost to Barren County, etc.

 

Dragon Football is not a lost cause. And, WC is not just a basketball school. When the basketball team was reaching the Sweet 16 Final 4 the football team was on their run making region finals and state semi appearances that DragonFire mentioned. As I posted on another thread, WC is a school that can compete at a high level in both football and basketball. Unfortunately, they are not competing at a high level in football this year. But, let's don't throw in the towel yet.

Joe Hood never won another playoff game after '93. That was a pretty significant decline as well, and it wasn't a short time for them to come out of it. It really took 9-10 years to fully recover. I surely hope that's not the timeframe here.

You are right DragonFire. After 1993, Coach Hood never won another playoff game. Unfortunately, the talent level in the mid and late 90's for WC was not what it was in the mid 80's through the early 90's.

 

It may take a little time for WC to get back up to a highly competitive level. However, I don't think it will take the 9-10 year time frame you mentioned. There is much potential in some of the lower grade levels of the program. WC will lose some students to the new Warren County High School in 2010. However, I still think within a few years WC can be competing at a very high level again. WC should not lose many students to the new high school due to the growth on the opposite end of town. I expect Greenwood to be hit a little harder by the new school.

True. But, it is not like they have never beaten Hoptown, Christian Co., and Owensboro. WC has had a fair amount of success against all of those teams who are now the top dogs in 5A Region 1 along with Bowling Green. The bigger issue at play is that they have almost no success against Bowling Green since the 1993 season. That has been the killer for them in the playoffs the majority of the years they have competed in the second highest classification (current 5A and old 3A).

Had Warren Central been in 3A from 03-06, they'd have been just fine against that region, with the possible exception of 2004. I'd go far enough to say that Warren Central would have won that region in 2003, and I would have relished the chance to have another shot at Bowling Green in 2005 and 2006. Their struggles since they've moved back down have been more about the team than it has where they're at. They'd have fared no better last year or this one if they were back in their old district or the new one with Greenwood. Heck, if they were in Greenwood's district, it'd probably be worse!

I agree with your comments about possible matchups from 2003-06 with the schools we have mentioned. Of O'boro, Hoptown, and Christian Co. the team that WC has played the least is Hoptown. By far, actually. Last year and this year is the only time in recent memory that WC and Hoptown have played a home and home. Most meetings between the two schools have come in the playoffs. And, as you said, most have not turned out well for WC. I still say that the lack of success against BG has been the real killer.
