Cats Pause Yearbook- 9th Region

I felt that too many players played in Boone's games the last couple of years and that there was a drop-off in talent at times. Maybe this year it wouldn't be as noticeable.

Maybe so but I don't really follow Boone as much as I do Highlands and Holmes so I wouldn't really know. I just know against both of those teams last year, a lack of depth hurt them as Holmes and Highlands both played tough m-2-m defense while throwing swarms of players at them which caused them to look tired in the 4th quarter.

It might not be that they're playing too many kids, but rather they aren't using them in the right situations.

Or a matter of not always using the best players at crunch time when it counts.

I felt that Highlands was allowed to play too physically at times by the referees. Lots of hand checking was let go.

Highlands has ALWAYS played a physical style of defense which is why it gets let go IMO. When you grow accustomed to seeing it all the time it just doesn't seem as obvious to people who don't see that style of play as much.

No matter. It helps the 9th region teams get used to what they would see in the state tournament.

Not bad Wildcat. I'll add a few things.

For Holmes the starting 5 will be:

PG- Riley G/F- D. Johnson G/F- R. Johnson G/F- J. Johnson G/F- Pittman

Arnold and Housley off the bench

For Highlands the starting 5 will be:

PG- Lother G/F- Grote G/F Kowolonek G/F- Watson C- Grubbs

Highlands might be a year away though as the majority of their talent is in the junior class with Kowolonek, Lother, and Grote.

The

player whose name you could be missing for Dixie is probably Zeke Pike who will see a lot of varsity as a freshman.

I'd go something like this:

1. Holmes

2. Boone Co

3. Covcath

4. NCC

5. Ryle

6. Highlands

7. St Henry

8. Conner

9. Dixie

10. Newport

Most likely the PG for Dixie is sophmore Matt Trammel. Pike may see some time in the 4 position.

I think Boone has some good depth too. They have seniors Andrew Brown and Cory Spaulding who can come off the bench and play hard as a 3/4 and a 2, respectively, as well as a solid third 2010 point guard in Schulze to spell Gabbard or Popp. Lay is a junior who will be able to spell the big men. Thamann, though undersized, will be a good designated three-point shooter in spot situations if left open. Montgomery will be a soph contributor.

No matter what Boone comes out the next 3 years with talent.

I think Boone losing Flannery really cut their to competing with Holmes. Holmes is just to talented this year and shouldn't be beat. Are there any problems with selfishness on this Holmes team? When you have so much talent on one team you sometimes run into this problem.

See last year's Holmes team and you'll realize there is no selfishness on this team. The biggest asset Holmes has this year is they have a very good point guard in Riley who knows how to distribute the rock and keep the ego's in check along with D. Johnson.

Also Pittman, the Johnson Brothers, Riley, D. Johnson, and Arnold are almost always together off the court so there's a trust and bond amongst them which shows on the court. I know Housely is almost ALWAYS with those group of guys off the court as well, so he will fit in nicely and be a huge addition.

NCC isn't getting the love that they gotten in the past. Pangallo and Connor make a solid back court and Giesler is a good big man who can stroke it from the outside as well. Don't forget, they beat Holmes last season.

IMO that will be Holmes most difficult lineup to defend as you'll see 6'2 Housely, 6'4 J. Johnson, 6'5 R. Johnson, 6'6 Pittman , and 6'6 Arnold.

Where is the PG in there?

Don't knock Avery by sayin their biggest asset this yera is that Riley can distribute the rock because Avery could do that. Riley will be dangerous because he can distribute the rock and knock down shots from the perimeter consistantly...

And I don't know if people understand how important the bolded portion of your post is.... You get the most out of a team when they know each other well enough and have played together enough and been around each other enough that they can play, and this is cliche, but just play as one. Always know where each other is on the court and that if one person screws up another is there to pick them up. That is when you maximize the talent on a team.

Holmes will be considerably bigger this year making them tougher to defend. When Riley and D. Johnson aren't in, you'll likely see Arnold and Housley in there with the big 3. IMO that will be Holmes most difficult lineup to defend as you'll see 6'2 Housely, 6'4 J. Johnson, 6'5 R. Johnson, 6'6 Pittman , and 6'6 Arnold.

I have seen both Housley and Arnold in the past week. I will give Housley 6 foot at most, not a hair more. Arnold 6'3 to 6'4 at most. Still tall, but those numbers are just a tad bit off. Both very solid players one way or another.

Housley or R. Johnson would run the point when Riley or D. Johnson are out.

I wasn't knocking Avery. If you read a few of my posts from before you'll see that I said that's why Holmes has been so successful the past few years is because they've had really good point guards in Jefferson, then Avery, and now Riley. But Riley is probably the most dangerous IMO since his shot is so consistent from behind the arc. Also your last paragraph is dead on.

I'm 6'1 and Housely is taller than me. Not by much, but still taller. And I'd say Arnold is closer to 6'5 as I when I saw him at the Highlands game I only came to the bottom of his nose. But doesn't really matter. Like you said, both are still talented players regardless of height.

Outside of Holmes and Boone I'd say NCC is probably the most dangerous team in the region. While their record may not show it at the end of the year most years, they have the capability of beating any team year in and year out with whatever talent they have, which showed last year against Holmes.
