I just think Brossart made a terrible mistake in hiring the current coach, plus the atmosphere on the staff doesn't seem much better either. I just feel it is absolutely ridiculous to make the players even more embarrassed by running sprints after the game. It's not the players fault they are being out-coached by leaps and bounds

 

I'm not sure I have any idea what "the atmosphere of the staff" even means, but I totally disagree with your comments about Coach Reinhart?? I think Brossart is lucky to have found a quality, passionate coach and by most reports a very good staff; especially given the timeframe their AD had to work with!! From all that I've heard they are doing a good job, working very hard, and trying to turn around an unfortunate situation?

 

Not sure I agree with the running after a tough night, but I think they are trying to instill an attitude that losing is not OK? They weren't given much to work with, and are forced to play a bunch of inexperienced, very young kids; and now are having to deal with multiple injuries to many of their key players. Give them time, and I think you'll be singing a different tune.

This is what I know about our football program. The Olliers are wonderful people, great guys, with the best interest of our kids at heart. Brossart High School has the unenviable situation of having to compete with NCC, Campbell County, and even CovCath for our own kids (from our five feeder grade schools). Perceptions are everything. The Olliers were not let go because of their wins and loss record. There was a growing perception that our players were not relating to their coaching styles which was very laid back, were not improving game to game, were not being held accountable, and our administration did not feel that the fledgling program could develop into a competitive program without a junior high team in place, and a young ambitious coaching staff to make it happen. The decision that had to be made was whether we were serious about football or not. The decision was that we wanted to make football a asset to our overall academics/athletics package and use it to attract potential players who were going elsewhere to come play at home for the Mustangs.

 

Coach Matt Reinhart and his staff fulfill the need for a young, vibrant, ambitious, hard-working football coaching staff. On gameday, it may appear that we are not making progress, etc., etc., etc., as we get pounded week after week, but we are confident that Coach Reinhart and his staff are doing the right things, teaching the right techniques, beating the bushes within our feeder schools to promote our program, and taking action steps to organize a junior high team, that will hopefully provide us with some experienced players down the road. This program is very much in its infancy. We may have jumped into the varsity arena too soon - hindsight is always 20-20, and our football program may be working against us right now, but anyone knowledgeable in Brossart athletics knows that it is only a matter of time until football joins all of our other team sports in competing for championships, and the right coaching staff is in place to see that we get there.

 

The sprints following recent losses may be a form of sending a message to our players that if we can't play football the way we have been taught at practice, then we can run. Maybe it goes back to the accountability factor that I mentioned earlier. Last year's team (for the most part) accepted losing and functioned with a get-em-next-time social club attitude. Those attitudes never win ballgames, let alone championships. Ask any of our basketball players. They succeed through tough love, through repitition, through being held accountable for their mistakes. They have never accepted "get-em-next time." They have the utmost confidence in their coaching staff and experience success as a result. Perhaps some of those players running those sprints won't survive as Brossart football players. This is Coach Reinhart's first season as our head coach. He accepted the hand that he inherited. His staff is in no jeopardy of being replaced because of a losing season - because they are doing things the right way. He is making an investment in the youth of our program, filling key positions with freshmen and sophomores. He is playing the games the way the game should be played - a good mix of run and pass, even though doing this might look bad on the scoreboard. He could be much more conservative and maybe the losses wouldn't be so lopsided - but what is a good score to lose by? And what would be gained by not teaching our young charges what they are going to need to be successful in the future.

 

The players who this football program really means something to will endorse Coach Reinhart and his staff. They have a lot of catching up to do, but I have every confidence that if it can be done, they are more than capable of getting it done.

If Newport doesn't take this one they need to rethink their entire program.

Newport should win this one with or without those (2) key players, who IMO are just distractions to the other players. I believe there are only 1 or 2 players on this team that care about their own stats. The other 40 or so boys are there to play as a team and I don't think this will be their last win.

They played much better last week against Lloyd even though you couldn't tell that from the score.

They just need a good 'ol dose of confidence. They have the talent and the teamwork.
