Master of the Hardwood Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 It has been in Bowling Green now for a while, kinda like the girls basketball tourney. I know they like to spread the tourneys out all over the state, but shouldn't they move them all around Kentucky?? Would make it better to have it at some of the great courses we have all over the state. Not saying that Bowling Green doesn't have a nice course, it's great for the tourney and the sponsors are great too, but i'm sure if they wanted to move it they could get the same interest from sponsors at other venues and better courses....
jahearme Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 The Boys and Girls State Golf Tournament will be in Bowling Green until someone outbids Leachman's. Like I always say, It's all about the Benjamins baby. Plus, believe it or not, Bowling Green is pretty close to the center of the state.

And how many other courses would be willing to close down for the entire week as well as do all that Bowling Green CC does for the state tournament.
golfDad90 Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 And how many other courses would be willing to close down for the entire week as well as do all that Bowling Green CC does for the state tournament. And I've heard that Bowling Green can get the volunteers they need to run the event. Whoever told me that implied that it was difficult to get the volunteers in other parts of the state. With that, I think it's a dis-service to the kids to have the tourney at the same course each year. I do understand that benjamins talk. Even though Bowling Green High School had an excellent team last year, I think they definitely had an advantage playing on a home course. There's another debate in whether Marshall County should have been disqualified - but won't go there here.
Master of the Hardwood Posted September 18, 2008 Author Posted September 18, 2008 That is kinda what I was getting at. Yes great help, sponsors, close for the week, etc., but it's a real advantage for the teams that are a lot closer and can play there everyday or more than some others. I know it's not a real big deal to some, but playing a course everyday compared to 3 or 4 times a year makes a huge difference in scores! Would be nice just to move it around I think!

From what I understand, I alot of the kids from Bowling Green are not member at BGCC. They are members at Indian Hills and Olde Stone.
golfDad90 Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 My son adapts well to some courses and can score decently well on the 3rd or so time playing it. Other courses are much more of a challenge. Mt Sterling Country Club qualifies as one of the "you need to play it 10 times" due to the difficult greens. Bowling Green Country Club has types of grass that you don't see as much in Kentucky (Bermuda?) so you need to play it to understand how the club passes through their rough. I would say that you need to play Bowling Green several times (3-4) in order to get close to "minimizing" your score out there. Actually, having the state tournament at Bowling Green every year is helpful if you're a junior or senior and have played it in past years. But, looking at the past medalists (Case Cochran and Travis Thompson), you could say that there isn't that much of an advantage to local players. At the end of the day, the better players score well no matter the course. However, at a team level, there's probably a 4 or 5 stroke advantage to local teams. In my heart, I believe the tournament should be moved around the state. I really like having competitions at our home course - we get a 3-4 stroke advantage per player.
Butterfingers Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 The tournament did move from year to year but as jahearme said that green stuff talks, loud!
ukfan14 Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Actually, Bowling Green CC has a 5 year contract in which there are two years left (this year and next year) so when that contract is up, the course changes

judgesmales Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 The state golf tournament should have a rotation of about 5 courses around the state.
jahearme Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 The state golf tournament should have a rotation of about 5 courses around the state. How about these cities? I'm listing 2 courses in each area in case one course doesn't want to host both the boys and the girls. Bowling Green (Bowling Green CC and Indian Hills) Richmond (Arlington and Gibson Bay) Paducah (CC of Paducah and Drake's Creek) Elizabethtown (E-town CC and Lincoln Trail) London (London CC and Crooked Creek) Those are just some suggestions. I guess you could have it in Covington/Newport/Ft. Thomas/all the other cities up there. Maybe at Lassing Pointe for the Boys and Boone Links for the Girls???????

The home course advantage is a huge factor. That course is not like anything in the NKY area. I played last year and I was no where near prepared for a course like that after I had been playing all year on the burnt surfaces all around NKY. Not only because of the course conditions but because not being comfortable on every tee because its only the second time I had even seen the hole before. True, if your playing well it doesn't really matter all that much, but bring a player at the top of his game to a course he knows then take him to a course hes unfamiliar with the next day and I'll bet you anything that score inflates.
jahearme Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 I am thinking Pendleton Country Club for the girls.:sssh: As good of shape as it was in the other day when I was there, it could host just about any tournament. If we could just get Falmouth/Butler to put in some hotels......
