Well, I agree with your earlier post of putting Wilson at receiver and using DeMatteo at QB. A few years ago Coach Tom switched Brady Hunefeld from QB to receiver and brought up soph QB Bricking after a few games. That turned out real well that year. I'm going to say Wilson is back at QB for CovCath game, but if things get dicey, we'll see DeMatteo back in.

 

I heard through the grape vine that Wilson is out as QB and DeMatteo is in. I heard they also have a new starting WR but it's not Wilson.

Who's the new receiver? Is it someone that didn't even play last week?

 

Granted, I've only seen them once this year, and for a guy that has worked as the #1 all offseason, Wilson just didn't look comfortable under center last week. DeMatteo looked very poised and under control. Like OlDog75 said, bringing in the sophomore and moving the upperclass qb to wr served them very well 4 years ago. I think this is another year that this would work well. Tom could throw in some plays specifically for Wilson that would allow him to throw the ball off a pitch or backwards pass. He's an athlete that could make it work, unless he doesn't have any hands.

I thought going into last Friday, NCC was second only to Highlands in NKY. CCH appeared to be off the charts after a less than stellar pre-season and a trouncing in their first game.

 

However, this is why the Highlands and CCH programs are at the top year after year. They just seem to find a way to "mature" young players quickly. Last Friday was key for this team. I believe that the game was good for both programs and really did not hurt NCC. But it certainly help CCH. Look for CCH to compete from this point on.

 

Dixie is young in many spots, but will not be able to hang with a team that has a tradition of getting it done when it needs to.

I've only seen the SK game, but Dematteo was much more impressive under center. I'd be shocked if he didn't start after his performance in three quarters vs SK.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only person that recognized this.

 

As for Saturday, I wouldn't be surprised to see Wilson start again. I think Spritzky will give him another shot, but if he faulters early, I'd look for DeMatteo to come in.

 

For once, I didn't cap on the offense. I think the spread offense works well with the personnel they have, but I don't think they'll be able to stretch the field vertically like past years. The line doesn't appear as big and strong as past years, so lining up and running at the other team isn't going to be very successfull this year. They just need to accept and work on the 5, 10, and 15 yard passes. There's no need to go for broke every other play. If they stick with the short passes, the longer ones will eventually open up. With DeMatteo running the show, he gives the team more options. He seems to throw the ball well on the move, which is going to be needed this year. He runs well, which works well with the spread, plus add in the fact that they're running some options this year. Godsey gives the offense a big target over the middle, which in past years really wasn't taken advantage of and needs to be. I was expecting more of Brock as the featured back, but that may be do to the wet field conditions, which do not fit his style of running. However, they just need to continue getting him the ball in the open field with quick screens and slants, and then let him make something happen. Adding Wilson to the receiving corps would add another good sized receiver that they lack right now.

 

Defensively, they just have to eliminate the big plays.

 

With all that said, I still don't think they'll have enough to pull off the upset over CCH. However, if they take the short passes, move the chains, and keep CCH's offense off the field, they can keep this game close, and possibly pull off the upset.

Gee, I am gone for a couple of days and what do I find? Why only 23 post in the Covington Catholic Highway game against, Dixie's "Lil" Colonels (remember when I was in HS they were the "Lil Colonels").

 

All joking aside, what must Dixie do to restore the rich tradition of Football that they had back in the 50's, 60's & 70's? Last years team was from all accounts "The team" but they fell far short of their goal, and from what I am hearing (I work with a lady whose son plays football for Turkeyfoot) the middle school team isn't very good this year either.

 

Has open enrollment hurt Dixie? Does having two outstanding football schools so close to Dixie (CovCath & Beechwood) really hurt Dixie that much? Where have all those Alums of those 50's, 60's and 70's great football teams gone? I remember attending and watching those Dixie Lil Colonels football teams year's before CovCath ever had a football team!

Open enrollment definitely hasn't hurt Dixie. Prior to open enrollment, Dixie wasn't very competitive at all. How many consecutive years did they lose to CovCath and Highlands? :irked: Anyhow, they have a young team this year. We'll have to wait and see how they progress over the years as they also have a strong freshman team this year. It does sound like Turkeyfoot is down this year, but that could be attributed to a number of things.

Turkeyfoot has to compete with the NKYL Spartans, Erlanger Lions and Raiders also....
