I think you should also do leadership training for your captains.

John Hardin has different captains for every game for the coin toss.

 

Most of todays' young men lack leadership skills and I would love to see the same captains for every game. This way by the end of the season leaders have been developed when the season starts to really mean something.

When I played, captains were choosen for Friday night by the coaches based on practice. At the end of the year players voted on the captain award.

When I played the players elected the Captains. Each player turned in a name with who they wanted as Captain. The coach took the names into his office and counted them up. He announced the Captains the next practice. 30 years passed and in talking with the head coach I found out that he selected who he wanted regardless of what we wanted. We never knew the difference.

 

 

As long as the coach is "counting the votes" - letting the team "vote" is a good idea. :lol:

Electing captains is good and bad IMO - I say this because I believe that a lot of times captains are elected basically on a popularity vote. Sometimes you get good captains but a lot of times you get bad leaders. IMO they should evaluate a players performance at practice and during the school week to see who has may the best effort to show leadership and maturity.

 

This is absolutely true. A captain should be somebody that the players & coaches respects & looks up to. Many times, a senior with no leadership characteristics gets selected just because they have been playing forever. There are many definitions of a leader and there are some captains that think they are leaders, but really aren't. A player can lead by example. Some players are natural leaders. These are easy to pick out. They work hard, give encouragement, don't cuss their teammates. It is an honor to be a captain and these positions should be filled by honorable players. Go Wildcats!
