Having a big venue is probably the best idea but it would take away from the atmosphere.

We've got a big new gym in Harlan County. I'm sure all the Corbin fans wouldn't mind having it here for the next seven or eight years.

How big is the new gym up in Rosspoint? I remember seeing the artist renditions of it on the Harlan County school board website. It looked a lot like Knox Centrals gym in the set up. I imagine it is much larger though. KC did a good job with the tournament but the seating was a complete failure. It was much too crowded in there. I think the current Knox Central Middle school (old KCHS) would have been a better location last season.

 

I'm a Corbin fan but I think the school gyms provide a better atmosphere. Putting the students right on the floor to hoot, holler, and heckle is what make tournament atmospheres in my opinion.

Les, you might be surprised what school adminstrators will decide once they see the projected income that could be generated by a large venue like the civic center can offer each school in the region. Some of the smaller schools rarely get a share of the regional profits. If they can get a guaranteed share each year, regardless if they make the region or not they might decide it is not such a bad idea and vote for the central location. These days the mighty dollar seems to be pretty important to state agencies. I am not sure what kind of package each school could be provided but I would be willing to bet the OBI's, Williamsburgs' and Red Birds' of the region would enjoy a nice check each spring. Just food for thought.

Im a fan of the 13th region and Corbin, but you all are smart enough to get on a computer so I take it your are all smart enough to look at all of the options. It has not taken away from the games in other regions and it will not if it is ever done in this region. The bigger floor and atmosohere will be great it will be a better venue for everyone for all of the reasons I listed in my previous post and there is no bad sides to having the 13th region tournement played on a bigger neutrel floor it better prepares the kids and you still DO NOT loose the fans, you just gain a tremondous advantage for eveyone involved.

I do like the idea of a bigger venue as I to am a 13th region fan, but if you had it in a larger area like some of you are talking about would they charge more at the door. I know that this is kind of off the subject but it seems to me as some of us were discussing the other day some of the admissions that are being charged at these games as well as other such as football, baseball etc are becoming very expensive for a large family of 5 or 6 it becomes very expensive on the wallet.

It doesn't matter, it's really a dead issue right now because the region tournaments have been given out all the way up to 2013.

Not so sure it is a dead issue. I believe it takes only a vote of the member schools of the region to amend any policy. If you look at location, etc....Williamsburg, Whitley, South, Corbin, Lynn Camp, North Laurel, Barbourville, and Knox Central are all pretty close to the new civic center. That would be 8 votes alone. Then throw in the smaller schools who could use the revenue and never get to host the regional anyway...Pineville, Red Bird, Jackson Co, OBI and that would be a strong majority. With consolidation the number of schools in Harlan county decreased so only Harlan County, Harlan Ind and Middlesboro would be distantly challenged. Of course, who knows how the schools would vote. I do believe they will have the option in the near future. One has to remember the majority rules.

This is very true. Any of the schools could simply substitute the Civic Center in place of their school. The Civic Center could take care of the whole event on behalf of the host school and pay the school a percentage of the revenue. This is truly a no brainer.

This isn't the first time I've heard Corbin fans accuse Harlan Countians of not having brains.

I figured with a nick like Fossil, he might be a Harlan County fan as well....it is Coal country you know. I am sure most in Harlan would not want to make the drive to the Tri Counties for the region each year, but if it does happen at least you can find a place to park, a reserved seat with no clearing of the gym and get back home at a decent hour since there would not be an hour delay between games to allow for the second game crowd. Some students are forced to be out past midnight during school night and even during the ACT state testing window with the current situation. It would be good for most of the regional schools, I think that was why Fossil used the No-Brainer phrase. I do not think it was soley directed at any particular group, just that it makes good sense for the fans, students and most of the schools within the 13th region. If the schools decide they want to keep the same format, then so be it. But if you look at things all the way around for the majority of teams,.................... a place like the Civic Center would be hard to beat.
