I will probably vote for a third party candidate if I am absolutely sure that my vote is not needed to keep Barack Hussein Obama out of the White House. I am not sure which candidate I would vote for - it would probably be either Bob Barr or the Constitution Party's candidate. Although I am a libertarian, I am not too crazy about Barr.

His association with the ACLU, his opposition to the Iraq War, his reversal on his postion on the Defense of Marriage Act, and some of his criticisms of the Patriot Act for starters. I think that Barr has made some suspicious political conversions to keep himself in the public spotlight and I do not find him very likable. Other than that, I think Bob Barr is great.

I would urge you to vote for Barr as a libertarian. If Barr can get over a certain percentage of the vote ( I think 2%) then the Libertarian Party can be an official party instead of a "political group" this would greatly help the party in this state and as a whole.

I have not ruled out voting for Barr because I would like to see the party get off the ground but I really do not like some of Barr's positions and I will not be a party to putting Obama into the White House.

I can understand that and I share your same sentiments about Obama. But I feel comfortable that McCain will soundly beat Obama. Hillary was Obama's only (albeit still slim) chance of taking Kentucky.

That's a common misconception. As I said voting for third party candidates will help further 3rd parties, especially with some of Kentucky's election laws.

Barr's not a bad candidate. His association with the ACLU was former, he has actually criticized them. His criticism of the Iraq War was not the typical "no WMD" mantra, it was focused more on spending and graft and I agree with him. And I don't like the Patriot Act, either. I with Aces, though, I only vote for Barr if McCain is clearly ahead.

I am in the same boat as you. Chuck Baldwin is the Constitution Party's candidate, and, if I become assured of an Obama loss (as bad as it sounds), he will probably get my vote. BTW, did anyone know that the Constitution Party is the 3rd-largest in the US. I'd love to see them and the Libertarian Party combine.

You often advocate polices here that are at odds with the principles of the Libertarian Party. I think many "liberals" assume that they are more "libertarian" because both words share a common root. You cannot be a true libertarian without believing in economic freedom and as small a government as practicable. Economic freedom (i.e., capitalism) is a cornerstone of the libertarian philosophy.

 

The Libertarian Party shares many more values with the right wing of the Republican Party than with any part of the Democratic Party. That is why Barr, who was one of the most conservative Republicans in Congress, had little trouble making the transition. Conservative talk radio hosts Neil Boortz and Michael Savage also fit in the libertarian mold pretty well, although both of them have clashed with libertarians on national security issues.

 

Part of the reason that the Libertarian Party has not grown into a major national party, IMO, is that many of its members are so intolerant of individuals who do not subscribe to all of the party's positions. I respect the dedication to principle that is typical of libertarians but I also believe that many of them need to be just a little more flexible so that the tent can be made a little bigger.

 

Libertarianism is a far cry from "Democratic Socialism" or any any other brand of socialism for that matter, including the kind espoused by Barack Obama and his mentors.
