Packers attitude on Favre: If you want to play, show up.

Featured Replies

It is their fault b/c they made him decide in March. Also, he never retired officially and they knew it. He just had a press conference saying he was retiring.

He is officially retired..He has to file papers to get reinstated..So if what you say is true he didn't retire until way after his original press conference. which means he probably retired knowing he wanted to come back...Makes no sense.

Why did they take another QB in the same drat then. How many teams draft backup QB's w/ the first 60 picks in the draft?

It's laughable to say that since one good QB was a backup their they are the best at drafting QB's and trading them. Laughable. One QB panning out in the last 15 years makes them the best?

Mark Brunell

How many teams have the same track record in that time? The Packers had Favre, and they also traded Brunell who QBed the Jags during their best seasons and Hasselbeck who nearly lead Seattle to a Super Bowl victory. And, now they have Rodgers, who they think is ready to lead their team.

I'm guessing the Packers probably never envisioned Brohm being available that late. When he was, the value was too good to pass on at a position they needed to fill. Is it that hard to connect the dots there?

Also, there is a thing called injuries in the NFL...it's always smart to have good depth at every position if possible.

I don't see the big deal with the Packers drafting Brohm late in round two and I don't see a problem with them wanting to move forward as opposed to being kept in limbo year after year by Brett Favre.

That's all he's asking for and again this is Brett Favre. He's made it very clear that if they don't want him that's fine, but they aren't going to tell him he's not allowed to play in the NFL. There is always talk in the NFL about a window to win the Super Bowl. W/ Favre GB's window is open w/ Rodgers and Brohm it's not open this year or for a while.

How many teams draft their backup QB in the 2nd round 3 years after using a 1st round pick on their "starter" that's never made a start? They at the very least wonder what they have in Rodgers. Last year Favre threw for over 4100 yards and 28 TD's and got the team to w/ in one score of the SB. I'll go on record as saying anyone who replaces him won't do that this year in GB.

If they were so confident in Rodgers why are they saying Favre can come back now? Why don't they go ahead and release him if they're in such good shape?

Do I really need to answer that question? Why on earth would you release him and risk letting a team in your own division sign him and have to play against him twice a year? That would make no sense at all. QB is the only weakness the Vikings have on paper...they couldn't let Favre go there, especially without getting anything in return.

If Favre plays anywhere else, the Packers would be stupid to do anything other than trade him there.

I wouldn't exactly say getting two guys in 15 years that never started a game while being a backup is developing them. They had some luck that the guys had trade value, but I'm not anointing them the franchise that drafts QB's the best b/c of Brunell or Hasslebeck. New Engalnd had pretty good luck w/ a guy named Brady. Luckily for them they never traded him. The key is do they really think they have somehitng in Rodgers? I think not so much b/c they drafted a guy in the 2nd round of this years draft. Not a lot of teams draft backup QB's that early if they have total confidence in the starter.

B/c he asked them to let him come back and they said no. He's done more for that city and that franchise than anyone could have ever immagined and they're treating him like a nobody. What they should have done was called a press conference the day he said he wanted back, and treated Rodgers like the guy who never made a start in the NFL. They did it backwards and now they're in a bad spot. If Favre is traded somewhere he doesn't want to go he won't go there and they're stuck even more. TO did the same thing when he was traded to Baltimore.

Sorta like how they also asked him to comeback and not retire and he told them no, that he was ready to retire?

Knowing that they drafted a guy a couple of years back and they supposedly liked him what would have been the harm in letting Favre wait until July to make a decision? The club knew that he was 38 and thinks about retiring every year after the season and that in July he's ready to go again. They obviously need a backup plan for Favre but they have it. They also knew that he would retire in the next 3 years and they need to be prepared, and they are, but how do they not get excited that he wants back. With him they're legitimate contenders to win the title.

Good job sidestepping the whole point. How many QB's have the Patriots developed since Brady's been their guy? Again, show me a team in the past 15 years that has had a hall-of-famer under center and has traded away two guys comparable to Hasselbeck and Brunell in the meantime.

Your logic is beyond flawed. Again, if drafting Brohm shows a lack of confidence in Rodgers, what does their rejection of Favre say?

Maybe my logic is flawed, but I say when you are indifferent about a HOFer like Favre returning to your team, then you're pretty confident in the guy you have. It makes sense to me anyway...

You're missing the whole thing.

1. They wanted a decision because they didn't want the whole offseason being a distraction like it has turned out to be..Hmmm

2. They aren't exited because he keeps toying with him..Say he comes back has a mediocre year and the Packers go nowhere..Then what? Right back in the same boat where Favre won't be satisfied with losing and will want to come back...Or...He comes back and loses in the playoffs but has a really good year, same story, he'll be disappointed that he was so close that he'll want to come back again...It's the same story over and over and it'll do the Packers good to just trade him now and move on..Get something for him while you can...

IMO Favre is in the wrong on this, he is acting like a cry baby to the media because he did what he wanted and now he wants to go back on that and everything be ok..It's like a CEO of a company resigning then a couple of months later wants to come back and expects his job to still be there...WRONG!

Favre has kept them in limbo for the past two seasons with his "should I play or not" routine...I can't blame them for tiring of it.

The Packers aren't a team with a shrinking window. They're a young talented team that should be in the hunt for several years...if they're confident in Rodgers and he delivers, they're looking at being an NFC frontrunner for several years.

As for the Packers themselves, they're not stuck at all. Favre can either stay retired or come back to the Packers...if they trade him, then he can either play for that team or stay retired. None of those scenarios hurt Green Bay.

If I could call the shots in Green Bay, I'd find out who Brett was interested in playing for and then I'd discuss trading him if those teams were interested. I wouldn't release him.

Ok then Atlanta would be better in my opinion. They drafted Favre, Vick, and Schaub. Favre is one of the best 5 QB's of all time, Vick was decent before he became a criminal, and they got good value for Schaub. GB has been lucky on 2 late round QB's that doesn't mean that Rodgers will be good. How many other QB's has GB drafted since Favre has been there?

No, I see what you're saying I disagree totally. This isn't some average Joe. This is the face of their franchise that they know waivers on if he wants to play or not. They should prepare the franchise for both options. When he makes up his mind in July you get ready then. He doesn't need the mini camps and all of that garbage anyway. They can prepaer all summer like he might not come back. They knew he would reconsider this year after just missing the NFC title. Favre may have been wrong in retiring, but he should be allowed to play if he wants. Other big time sports figures retire and make come backs all of the time. Why can't he?

What are the reasons why we should not expect Rodgers to be good?

The Packers have been watching him for 3+ years now. I think they ought to have a pretty good idea of what they have. The fact that they're not falling all over themselves to get Favre back under center says a lot more to me than drafting Brian Brohm late in the second round. Think about it.

They're not denying him the opportunity to play. They're just not handing him the starting position. There is a difference.
