There is more to the story, that people don't know!!!!!!!!!!!

That's a shame (the conflict), because both men are quality individuals... when I began broadcasting 8th Region games in the 70s, Eminence was one of the powers. Anyone remember the Sleets brothers, Vance Blades, Gino Kirshner (sp?), and others?

 

The classic double OT loss to Oldham County in the 8th Region SF in 1977 was one of the best basketball games I've ever witnessed in 30 years of covering KY HS basketball...

 

That was my senior season at Gallatin. I was there for that classic. Didn't Oldham's Troy McWilliams hit 2 buzzer beaters in that one?

Also, who could forget Lamont Sleets scoring 47 in a 60-59 loss to 33-1 Grant Co. in the 1979 first round? BTW, the Braves won the 8th that year and their only regular season loss was at home to Eminence.

Wow! Someone does remember. I still have the radio broadcast on tape.

 

Scenario: Oldham led by double figures most of the game - note that Eminence had whipped OC by 20+ points twice during the season - but Eminence eased ahead by two late. With 5 seconds left, Gino Kirshner (sp?) went to the line for 1 and the bonus with a chance to ice it. (remember, no 3 point shot then). He missed the first, Billy Shinault rebounded for OC and kicked the outlet to McWilliams, who nailed an 18-20 footer at the buzzer to tie. Eminence missed a buzzer-beater at the end of the first OT that would have won it, and then McWilliams came through again at the end of the second OT with a corner shot that pulled it out.

 

What a blast...

 

The game marked a coming-out party for OC, which had endured about 12 consecutive years of mediocrity...but the party ended with a bang the next night when a young sophomore named Charles Hurt and Shelby County smashed the Colonels in the region finals.

 

Mont Sleets was an amazing player.

 

I remember that 1979 Braves team... Carroll County was also a tough team that year with Curt Robertson.
