One hint in general. Any time an element occurs in more than one place (as oxygen often does) try to balance saving that one until last. Also, if you have tried balancing an equation, and are having trouble getting the numbers to work, try using a coefficeint of 2 in place of somewhere that you have used a 1.

Thanks so much. I think between these examples and the Power Point that True Blue sent, I even understand it.

No problem! Glad to help. If you ever need any other assistance, look me up. I have tons of Power Points that I have created in my "free time" :D as a teacher. (Created three new ones this week on "break") I can also help out in physics, astronomy and earth/space science and have been known to be useful in a few others.

I just pm'd another type of equation for assistance. You are truly a blessing. She has to finish this course before the end of the school year in order to get credit and has a long way to go.

Here is what was sent...see if you can balance it.

C4H9OH + O2 --> CO2 + H2O

You have five minutes...;)

Your oxygens don't balance...try again. Remember that you have multiple O's on each side of the arrow (yields sign).

DANG IT! I wish I could count!

How does this look?

C4H9OH + 6O2 --> 4CO2 + 5H2O
