Rumbling and Grumblings for Campbell County

Featured Replies

Skunk. I believe what we have here is a supporter (parent?) of a player who is not seeing action. The complaining of not being there pre-season is not the real arguement, but the current lack of playing time. If this is correct, then allow the coach to make decisions as to who is playing and the people in the stands support the team. Read over the various threads of coaches leaving, it is about parents complaining and whining.

Thats right!!! Must be it. Kill the messenger to avoid the message. Avoid the points being made. Valid or not, deflect it back to anyone who dares to point out poor conduct. Ranks right up there with the teacher who says how good they are if only the kids would do the work.

The poster is making valid points and the insiders are just attacking not addressing the points. Speaks to itself.

One point to bring back up is the fact the coach has already said he was done before the season already started. It all points to less than best effort.

Sorry to disappoint you BB, but not a parent. Since I see that you are from PC, I guess that is why you are coming to defense of another PC'er.

So, since you were wrong on your assumption, let's look at the facts and you tell me, did the PC Varsity baseball coach leave his team to attend the Sweet 16, not this year, but every year? Be honest!

No my friend, if you want to build a winning tradition and a winning program, you dedicate yourself to those actions. You sacrafice the things that you would like to do for the betterment of YOUR program.

As far as the coach missing sessions, yes he did attend some BB games. If he missed some winter workouts, maybe it was because his wife had a couple of minor operations and he was at the hospital. Otherwise the man was where he was supposed to be.

I think you are confused to the debate. The assistant coach has missed everything and just made the first game this past week. The head coach missed as you said some to attend bb games but has consistently cancelled the weekend prior to start of season to attend the Sweet Sixteen. Add it up there has been very little practice (oh, I forgot weather is an excuse) but such has not prevented the other teams in the district in getting in more than twice as much as Campbell prior to the first game.

Hmmm, wasn't there a Basketball Coach who did the same thing to his Baskebtall team, by saying it's his last year? He abandoned his team, his school who was looking for his best effort, and to the kids that he was responsible for leading. Look what happened to that program. As you EXCELLENTLY put it, it leads to less than best effort.

Yes.

New coach comes in and exceeds expectations by demanding more and doing more.

I don't know the guy at all. I've never even heard of Campbell Co. other than to know they are named the Camels and they are close to Cincy. What I have a problem with is parents who think that a HIGH SCHOOL coach should dedicate his life to a HIGH SCHOOL team. Is it really THAT important? What, other than bragging rights, do you get from HIGH SCHOOL sports? And don't say a scholarship b.c those are few and far between if you look at percentages of student athletes receiving them. As far as the coach taking off to attend the State Tournament, that's a little sketchy I agree, but it seems like he's been doing it for years so why is it now a problem? Is it b.c he is playing the "wrong kids," or is it b.c it is hurting the program? If it was hurting the program wouldn't the administration, the coach's boss, take care of it? Does your administration just not care? There is your real problem, why not go to the principal and ask why something isn't being done? I bet I know, because it's only a small number, or one, parent who is upset with this habit. And let me check, we live in KENTUCKY where basketball is number one, sorry but that's fact. Now about supporting your program. If this coach isn't supporting his freshman and JV teams then he needs to reevaluate. Your youngsters are your lifeline, and if you aren't taking care of them then you need to worry about your future. These, in my mind, would be legitimate reasons to question a coach and I have questioned a couple of my colleagues on this very subject. One of them doesn't miss freshman or JV games anymore, and the other one moved on. What I can't condone is a parent who is mad that their child isn't playing getting on a website and trying to undermine their coach and team. No matter how much we want to say these comments effect the coach we all know better. The ones who read this stuff and take it to heart are the kids and that's who needs to be supported. Go Camels, keep your head up, and SUPPORT YOUR COACH!! TEAMS ARE FAMILIES!!! Families may argue, but they always support each other. I'm guessing SilverShadow would also complain if the coach was practicing too long or too much and their child wasn't playing. There is a reason little leagues are starting to ban some parents from attending games, or instilling a silent rule. No matter what a coach does, he always has a parent mad at him, and the mad parent is always right. Isn't this correct parents?

BufordT, I have no argument with anything that you are saying. But the posts on here do not suggest that this is an issue with parents who are upset that little Johnny is not getting playing time. As you suggest, and I can agree to a point, a teacher, a coach, an administrator, a parent, etc... should have a life. However, timing of these actions come into play. And it is unfortunate that the Sweet 16 historically falls the week before the Baseball season kicks off. And this is only an example of what we are reading on this post. There are many comments of behavior that is unbecoming of the success of program building. Let's face it, if your Senior starters are calling for additional practice, shouldn't the head coach see that as well?

BUT, your best point is the POINT. It does fall back onto the administration. The School Super came to the CCHS district with his own posse. That posse included the current baseball coach as well as the hire of the former Basketball coach. In both cases, there have been both public and private rumblings of the direction of the sports programs at these two levels. And you are absolutley correct, there is always going to be someone that you cannot please, but let's face it, no one can argue with someone who dedicates themselves to the program. There are ton's of complaints about Coach Mueller from the Highlands parents, but NONE are questioning his loyalty, work ethic and dedication to building a system that works at every level.

This is not just a CCHS issue, ask the fans at Dixie, Boone, Simon Kenton and Scott, just to name a few. These schools have a coach at one of the Big 3 sports, that dedication has been questioned. This thread started with fireball thrown at the Campbell County coach, fairly or not, but it is not just "rumbling and grumbling from Campbell County".

BufordT, the coach has already said he was done and did not care what anyone thought. The amount of practices can be counted on two hands with fingers to spare. As Skunk pointed out, PLAYERS are having practice on their own on days able to do so because they are not getting any as a team. Players are going to the batting cages on their own at their expense. An assistant coach has not attended anything but shows up after the season has started. Hate to bust a bubble here Buford but it is the players who are complaining to the parents.

If the kids that are PLAYING are complaining, not the reserves, then I have been way off base, and I'll apologize. I am very adamant in my support of my colleagues and yes, we are a fraternity. Trust me, if coaches don't support each other then we'll have no support. That is why I am so quick to jump to defend a coach I don't even know. Glad that you agree that a parent will always be upset no matter what a coach does. At least you are seeing the whole picture. Like I stated, if the coach isn't supporting his ENTIRE program then he is in the wrong. Sounds like Campbell Co. has some issues that go way beyond their coaches. I wish you all the best, and more importantly the kids the best. Hopefully if I ever reach the point where I lose my passion for working with kids I'll step aside before something like this happens. It's just hard for me to imagine a coach that would give less than their best to their kids. If the coach has been missing EVERY YEAR then why is this year a problem? Or is this a sentiment that has been building over many years? I do agree wholeheartedly that if the kids are trying to practice and the coach is being laissez-faire then there are problems. But I'll try to defend the guy again, this year HAS SUCKED B.C OF THE RAIN!!! My team has played 2 games but been rained out 9 times, ten if you want to count tomorrow. I know that's why I'm so cranky! :-) Good luck to Campbell Co. this year.

BufordT, Good Luck to you and yours. I respect you for what you do and why you do it. It's easy to be a critic, but again, a critic can be put in his place when dedication are hard work is being performed, which sounds like they way you have tried to shut up yours. That's what looks like needs to be done in Camel-land.

No dog in this fight, but kids going to the batting cages on their own and having practices on their own is nothing a lot of school kids do if they want to get better. My son used to play and he and his friends would do this all the time on their own to try and make themselves better players. They did not attend CCHS.This year had been terrible to get in practices because of the weather also.

Coaches know what the pay is when they apply for the job. I know for a fact the Freshman and JV coaches don't agree with the way the Varisty coaches run the program. Problem is they are afraid to say anything, which is a shame. The problem won't change until the coach is changed. Coach is a nice guy but not a baseball coach. Nice guys finish last.

I think we have had enough rumbling and grumblings.
