With tryouts just around the corner, what kind of turnout does your school expect.

I know Ryle had about 80 kids for the Varsity and JV squads last season, don't expect anything less this year.

Most programs, would love numbers like this. You could have a Varsity, JV and Freshman program, that could accommodate those who continue on.

I'm always curious, how many play Basketball and won't get out to late. I know many larger schools, can overcome this. I spoke with Dunbar's staff about their numbers and Coach M. told me, that most didn't participate in Basketball, on last years squad.

Ryle will field a freshmen team too. Hard to get a total number, JV and Frosh start a few days earlier then the varsity. They break it up seniors and juniors for varsity, everyone else for JV, freshmen and 8th graders for frosh.

You mean a Freshman can't play Varsity?

A great reason for a class system in baseball. I know of more than a few schools that are lucky to have 20 kids come out (9-12).

As usual DD has a tendency to exaggerate just a bit! While Ryle is a big school and has a good turnout, it was no where near 80. Last year Ryle kept 38 between varsity and JV which included 4 freshmen who played up on the JV squad. Varsity cut only a handful and JV around 15. By my math that is approximately 58, a very respectable turnout, but by no means 80. (I am being generous on the numbers cut.) This does not include the freshmen team. With the season Ryle had last year, I'm sure the turnout will be good and can only hope they have 80 to chose from this year!

It must be nice to have a school that has over 800 guys to choose from. We have a total of 35 guys in the entire school!!! Many of them never have played a day of baseball in their life. So we will start the season with only 3 guys practicing and when basketball season is over we hope to have 11-12 guys play this year. So when coaches complain that they only have enough players for a full varsity and jv squad, just think it could be MUCH worse.

That's why they have to ALL A competition. And Beechwood and LCA, two small schools seem to compete very well.

A few years ago, varsity at Ryle was pretty much "open class". In fact, 3 years ago coach Roesel started 5 sophmores. With their recent succcess at all levels, freshmen, JV and varsity and higher involvement in the Cincinnati AABC summer leagues, turnout has been tremoundus. So now, according to the Ryle web site, only juniors and seniors can tryout for varsity.

Since both freshman and sophomores tried out for JV, and juniors and seniors tried out for varsity, I am quite certain that DD's estimate of 80 is no exaggeration and was probably understated.

Freshmen don't really "try out" for JV, that is not their choice. They try out period and if the coaches feel their skills warrant it, they are moved up to JV. This will usually happen fairly quickly in the try out period. If you read DD's post carefully and the followup one about the freshmen team being separate, that is where the numbers I used are coming from. If you include everyone who tried out for Ryle baseball (less the 8th graders) then yes, 80 is underestimated. Again, Ryle should have a great turnout and a great season at all levels. Can't wait for Friday!

There will be more then 25 kids trying out for each of the 3 squads at Ryle this year, I assure you. You have 8 from the 07 varsity team, about 18 from the J V team plus kids that didn't try out last year, new to the school ect.

Pat will have plenty to look at.
