Government is paying a buttload of money now to give care to the uninsured. We mandate car insurance, and I'm pretty sure we mandate homeowner's insurance why not health? I'm not voting for Clinton in the primary but it's time for a universal healthcare plan for the country. And, a majority of Americans agree with me that there should be universal healthcare.

The government does not mandate home owners' insurance. If you own your home and can handle the risk of seeing it burn to the ground you have no obligation to insure it. If your home is mortgaged, your lender will require you to carry insurance on it to protect them not you.

 

The majority of people cannot name the representative and two US senators who represent them, but that does not mean we should eliminate Congress. Ask working people if the government should require them to pay for health care insurance and garnish their wages if they refuse and my guess is the majority would say no.

And car insurance (actually only liability insurance) is mandated not to protect the car driver, rather its mandated to protect the other person who suffers bodily or property damage due to the negligence of the car driver. Mandating health insurance would be more akin to requiring people to use seat belts, which I think is an intrusion into my free will. Makes absolute sense to wear them, I just don't think the govt should tell me how I have to protect myself. And I don't think the govt should have a right to force me to fund my retirement (social security) either. At some point, they'll tell me what I can eat, what I can wear, what I can drive, where I can work, where I have to live, etc., etc. I've got zero problem with the govt trying to educate people so they can make the right choices; but I've got a big problem with the govt making those choices for people.

I have also never understood how the same government could logically require adults driving cars to wear seatbelts, yet allow motercylists to ride without helmets. I am okay with the government requiring some safety measures such as seatbelts for children, but adults should be free to act stupidly as long as they pose no threat to others.
