Highlands Gymnasium

Other than the Turf Field (Which is probably 4th/5th best now in No Ky), what HHS facilities are very impressive? None that I can think of...

Weight Room is out-dated and small

Locker Rooms are below average

Gym is horrible

Baseball/Softball fields used to bad (Don't know anymore)

Track is below average unless it has been resurfaced in the last couple of years...

My point is, for a school that has a winning tradition in most all sports, the facilities have not been upgraded much over time. Hopefully what we are hearing about expansion will correct some of these issues....

The good news is they are upgrading the Educational facilities and that is first and foremost. Its got to come first and it will help our kids excel even further than they already do. The money is just not there for all sports. The football field I hear was a steal as far as price and that was all private donation wasnt it? I will say those football locker rooms are pretty scary.

Bingo. Academics first. And yes the Field Turf surface was paid for with private donations. The school district didn't put one penney into it. Heck, private donations paid for some costs (electrical, plumbing and fence at the south endzone) that were incurred at the same time as the field, but weren't really a part of the field because the school district couldn't/wouldn't pay for them.

Really other than the turf and the new lights (again, private donations paid for the lights) the football facilities are as bad as the gymnasium so I don't understand the comments about the need to take money out of football for basketball or football being more important than basketball are coming from. Totally uninformed.

But in spite of poor athletic facilities, our athletic programs are very good. Proves once again that its not the quality of the facilities that determines the quality of the programs; rather its the quality of coaches and kids using them.

So true. Quality is the key. It first can be measured in the administation, parents, coaches, kids and city residents that continue to support all the programs at each school. In my mind, nice new facilities are icing on the CAKE!
