Three Class - Northern Kentucky Basketball

See the way I look at that is, Holmes is definately with the big schools, and CovCath has to be there with Holmes, and Highlands has to be there with CovCath. Leave em all in place and move Scott up if you have to. I think if HHS was given the option of being the smallest big school or biggest medium school they would choose the former...
My thinking was that would be the way they would shake out if they were seperated by rankings or something along that line.

Kind of like in the NKAC Conference or football. Some schools voluntarily elect to "play up."

In my make-believe divisions, the teams are seperated by ability - not by enrollment.

While I understand your idea, can you image the KHSAA trying to do that (separating by ability)! I can hear the uproar already! :thumb::lol:

Right!

I was simply throwing out a "perfect world" scererio based on present day conditons here in Northern Kentucky, that would obviously change, at least between the Large Schools and the Mid-Majors on a year to year basis.

Wouldn't this be the same thing that the conference does? Move Scott in with the BIG schools and Highlands down to the MID schools and it looks just like the NKAC.

I like it! Once again, how can 280 schools vie for one basketball championship, yet football teams have roughly a 1 in 40 chance???

Just because:

a) that's the way we have always done it, or

b) that's the way the fans like it, doesn't hold water.

What about what's best to insure most, if not all, schools have a reasonable chance to compete for a championship?

Sadly, though, I agree the odds of something like this happening are slim. Remember, follow the money.

don't even think about screwing it up ( sweet 16 ) but if big if get rid of the ( recruiting ) schools independent, private and religous - 1 division public - 1 division would that be a hoot or what wow dixie scott s.k. boone conner ryle cooper campbell grant co.-public holy cross cov.cath. holmes highlands dayton belleview bishop brossert walton verona calvery - the other division basketball and football i know i left a lot of schools out but you see what happens

JUST FOR THE SAKE OF DISCUSSION, let's assume that the state would declare a three class basketball system (with the understanding that it will likely never happen) and after the restructure Northern Kentucky would find its three classes broken down as follows (broken down here by ability, more than size). The district competition would be done away with it and there would be three regional tournaments as follows:

Big Schools: Boone County, Conner, Ryle, Dixie Heights, CovCath, Holmes, Highlands, Campbell County, and Simon Kenton

Mid-Majors: St. Henry, Lloyd, Holy Cross, Newport, NCC, Brossart, Scott, and Walton-Verona

Small Schools: Heritage, Ludlow, Villa, Beechwood, Latin, Bellevue, Dayton, Calvary, and Silver Grove

Great Idea! :thumb:

Ohio has four divisions for basketball, but there are many more schools. Three divisions based on number of boys for the boys division and girls for the girls division. Can someone make this happen? Or does this make too much sense?

Small schools need to realize that they can work and get better to compete with the bigger schools. Don't make excuses; just work to get it done. You only put 5 out there on the court at a time. No pity parties at my house.

Mr. Athletics, I'm going to violate a rule here and reveal your identity - You must be Reynolds Flynn!

Flynn, the longtime head coach at Holmes (the biggest school in the region) used to profess that "it only takes five" as his arguement against basketball classification.

Bellevue, Dayton, Ludlow, Beechwood, Silver Grove and others in that boat can work in an attempt to try to get better and compete with the bigger schools until the cows come home and never, ever, are they going to compete with all of the big schools well enough to ever win a regional championship. There is always some "big school" out there who will derail them long before ever playing in the finals of the regional tournament.

Chances are that if the talent base exists within one of the aforementioned small schools, several of those talented players will defect to a "big" school (or a school with a "big" basketball program).

Sorry, I really don't think it can be done in todays day and age. When was the last time a truly "small school" or "small school basketball program" won a 9th Region Championship???

It's been fifty-eight years since a Division III team worked hard enough to win a regional championship.

Dayton worked hard enough in 1944 to win one, but Ludlow, Beechwood, and Silver Grove have never worked hard enough to win a regional chapionship, and I don't expect them to start working hard enough to win one anytime in the near future.

SHAME ON YOU SMALL SCHOOLS, You really need to start working harder!!!!! :fire:

If that was a "sucker" post, then go ahead and set the hook!

Small schools need to realize that they can work and get better to compete with the bigger schools. Don't make excuses; just work to get it done. You only put 5 out there on the court at a time. No pity parties at my house.

It may not happen every single year but it can't be done if you don't believe it will happen.

Sorry, but I must disagree. Success depends upon the following:

1. the number of kids from which to choose

2. socioeconomic status of families of said kids

3. coaching - quality and depth

4. quality youth sports programs/instruction

5. supportive parents

Discounting the size of the school is counterintuitive and simply doesn't agree with past results, as highlighted above.

Everyone dreams of the Cinderella story. Even some pretty good movies are produced about it. However, it is RARE (thus the interest), so why penalize kids every year by placing them in an environment in which they cannot succeed (their apparently weak work ethic notwithstanding:rolleyes:) while waiting for the once in a generation success story????
