I hear that Gallatin didn't play well at all. They didn't hit any three's in either game and only shot like 29% in this game. I'm sure Hazard's defense had a little something to do with it.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Gallatin County, after losing by only a point to Brossart, the eventual "A" state champ last year.

 

I thought that Gull-at-ten (as the announcer insisted on calling them on Thursday night) played together extremely well or that the Metcalfes made them look good on Thursday night.

 

Hazard is a quality ballteam and can make some noise down in that lower bracket. I look for them to handle Rose Hill.

Neither team shoot well. Hazard 40% (2/6 3's), Gallatin 32% (0/6 3's). Hazard shot poorly from the foul line 13/25 compared to Gallatin 16/21. Hazard also outrebounded Gallatin.

The Wildcats will face a Hazard team that comes into the game with a record of 18-3 out of the 14th Region. Only one of the Hazard losses comes against a KY team - June Buchannan. In talking to those who saw the Bulldogs play last night, they are compared to an Anderson County in the 8th Region, just more athletic. We'll see how the Wildcats handle them tonight.

 

Hazard is about 60% bigger than Gallatin County. The Wildcats started out patient with their offense. Not forcing anything, but trying to get the ball down low poses a problem. Halfway through the period, Hazard had a 4-2 lead over the Wildcats. 5 for 5 free throw shooting by the Wildcats kept them in the quarter as it ended with Hazard up 10-7.

 

Trent Maddox hit a pull up jumper in the lane to give the Wildcats their first lead at 12-11 with 4:44 left in the half. David Henson added two more on the next possession to extend the lead to 3 with 4:20 to go. The Wildcats to that point were on a 7-1 run in the quarter. The Wildcats defense kept Hazard at bay for the first 5 minutes of the period, holding the Bulldogs to just 2 free throws for 6 minutes. Hazard tied the game at 16 with 52 seconds to go. The half ended with a Taylor Jaones hitting a jumper as the clock ran out giving Gallatin County the 2 point lead, 20-18.

 

Hazard came out of the locker room renewed. They took the lead and held the Wildcats scoreless for the first 5:45 of the third until Trent Maddox hit a jumper from the free throw line. An 11-2 run for the quarter as Hazard ended up the third quarter with a 29-22 lead.

 

Zac Jones came alive in the final eight minutes scoring 9 points in the first 5:30 minutes to pull the Wildcats within 4 points, 38-34 with 2:30 to go. With some poor officiating, Hazard extended their lead to 9 with a minute to go, 46-38. The Bulldogs would advance in the tournament with the 49-40 defeat of the Gallatin County Wildcats.

What was so poor about the officiating? I hope you aren't blaming the loss on the officials. Aren't these supposed to be some of the best in the state?

I want to add this. If I get some heat for it, I don't really care, but I was greatly disappointed by the Wildcats fans. Not all of them, but the ones yelling just about every word in the book that you can't say on the radio at the officials. You know the ones.

 

I agree, the officiating wasn't the best. But as someone once said, act like you've been there. The one kept yelling "You just want Bardstown and Hazard." Bardstown got beat.

 

I am far from an angel about the officiating. Especially in the 8th region. But to yell and scream like that is idiotic. The only thing that will get you is either thrown out. (which I'm surprised that the official in front of me didn't) The same guy yelling about Bardstown was also yelling across the floor for Terry Coldiron. Like he can do anything.

 

There was a radio broadcast going on next to me. I hope they ran the game in delay due to what was being said above me.

 

I know the Wildcats fans are passionate. Believe me. Even though I cover the rest of the area now, I got my start with Gallatin County. I pull for them too.

 

Tonight went too far. Some sunk to a real low level. Especially calling one of the Hazard players a "Class Act".

The Wildcats made no three pointers for the second game in a row.

Hard fought win for Hazard. GC is a solid ballclub. # 13 Jones was the best player on the court in the 4q. Bad calls went both ways. GC played a zone in the 2q that Hazard had trouble with. I could be wrong, but GC seemed to play more man to man than zone in the second half. Hazard was able to get the ball down low in the second half against the man to man, that was difference in the game.
