Highlands Athletics - best years

Featured Replies

Wow - that's all I can say.

Why doesn't Highlands get more exposure nationally (unless it does and I am just not paying attention since my school doesn't compete against them or even in same class)?

You hear about St. X, Trinity and Male nationally (deservedly so) but why not Highlands?

They were getting plenty of national exposure within those years. Gino's senior year they were as high as #4 in one preseason poll. Not sure what they finished that year but were 14-1 with the only loss coming to a very winable:madman: Elder game at Paul Brown stadium.

When you take into account the success the basketball program had as well....I believe Highlands may have won that region all 4 years.

Lets take basketball into account as well. I think it has to be their best.

and don't forget baseball, as well as the other sports (both boys and girls). I think all-around it was the best period.

The 96 graduating class went to the state finals in football, won the region in baseball and lost to the eventual state champions. The 97 graduating class went 15-0 in football, lost in the state finals in basketball and won the region in baseball only to lose to the eventual state champions...again.

Those classes started it, Lorenzen and Guidugli's classes continued it. It was about a 6-7 years of HHS athletic prowess...

Well, they received national recognition/exposure this year. Consider these:

1. Highlands finished the season ranked 21st nationally in the final 2007 MaxPreps/CalPreps rankings, only one of two KY teams ranked in the top 25 (along with Trinity).

2. Highlands was invited and played (and won!) in the 2007 Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge, played at UC. Highlands is the only KY team ever to be invited to participate in this event, and it is widely considered to be the nation's premier prep football event.
