I know of schools in the 14th, that if they could win the All "A", that it would make their season. When these small schools have a slim selection to choose from, they cant be expecting too much. You have to work with what you got, and I think that sometimes people forget that.

I will be the first one to admit that you have to be absolutley loaded to win your regional Tournement unless you receive a light shinning down upon you. The best teams usually win (most talent and most heart).

When you have to compete with schools that can beat your population three or sometimes four to one, then I sometimes don't think that's fair; but hey, life isn't fair all the time, but we learn to live with it and go on.

So, yeah I do think the All "A" is a wonderful thing, because it gives the little man a chance to shine!

In the 14th it still is an exciting tournament, especially for girls basketball.

I wouldn't say that the 9th team Parochial schools are just so awesome and amazing. I just don't think there are many strong small or "A" public schools in the 9th. Because if the 9th region Parochial A schools were so good they would rule NKY no matter what size. And this isn't the case....or at least not that I have seen. JMO...

 

Ludlow is the best small public school this year....and they have beat St. Henry and Villa (2 parochial schools from the 9th). They just aren't as good as NCC.....

Various reasons and I would say it's a combination years of strong tradition and an endless supply of talent from their so called "Feeder schools". Small schools like Bellevue, Dayton and Ludlow are pretty much landlocked and really only draw kids from their small communities. The parochials can draw from a wide range of areas and it does benefit their athletic programs IMO.

Exactly. I don't think the small 9th region public schools would lose any sleep over NCC, Holy Cross, and St. Henry opting out of the tournament.

Contrary to what some posters may think, the people I have talked to at the small parocial schools DO take this tourney very seriously. There is no way they don't value the merits of this tourney, and no way any of them would think of not playing in it.

Being a fan of small school basketball, I love the All "A" Classic, but I have seen a lot of teams struggle after the All "A". If a team loses in the All "A" Regional, and doesn't have much of a chance of winning their District Tournament because of the talent level of the big schools, then how does a coach keep them playing hard and improving game after game? I have even heard some coach's say that after the All "A" they start building for next year. Any thoughts??

I would think you wouldn't want to show a give up attitude. Not good for current players or players coming up.

I have seen teams that win the All 'A" have trouble getting motivated for about 2 weeks after going to Richmond. We always call them The Post Class A Blues.

 

Some teams that make it to Richmond are just happy to be there. Those who are truly good basketball teams are able to finish the season strong and sometimes upset the big boys in district and regional play.

I am glad you didn't mention Beechwood.

The 14th it is still great. For example this year in the boys the top two teams are in the All A and people may be able to see these two teams play each other for a good game of basketball. It also gives teams a chance to pull off an upset and could be a big confidence boost for them. It also shows that a small school can compete with schools their size.

As far as loosing the All A, especially being a favorite is should inspire the team to work hard. Winning the All A or competing for the All A can be used for a confidence boost in which most of the time the best teams are in the All A in the 14th. A team that isnt suppose to win a game goes in and knockes off a top seed then this could make the season and give them the confidnece needed to compete.

For example a year or two ago a team knocked off one of the top two teams in the All A and that made their 4th win in the season. Loosing the next game and most of the rest until districs. This team went in to distric as a 4th seed and knocked off the number one team. Got them into region with 5 wins. Things happen and a team can never give up. If the coach gives up then the season is already over.
