PepRock01 Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 After looking at the Candidate match thing putting him in my top 3 I am curious as to some rumors I have heard about him. I would look it up myself but I am at work and most sites outside of this are blocked. Someone told me that he ONLY accept campaign contributions from Mormons and Mormon companies, what is the validity of this claim?

To me, this makes ZERO sense as when word of this got out and it will, his chances are completely shot at the Presidential bid.
HHSDad Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Totally untrue. His top 5 contributors are Goldman Saches, Merrill Lynch, Marriott International, Bain Capital and Morgan Stanley. However, 83% of all Utah presidential donations go to Mitt Romney. Only California has sent more money to Romney than Utah.

I agree, that is why I was skeptical. Totally untrue. His top 5 contributors are Goldman Saches, Merrill Lynch, Marriott International, Bain Capital and Morgan Stanley. ladiesbballcoach Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I heard something on one of the shows that Michigan has a large Mormon population.
HHSDad Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Do you have a link to that? Here's the link to the 83%. I'm holding the other link close to the vest.
PepRock01 Posted January 11, 2008 Author Posted January 11, 2008 Here's the link to the 83%. I'm holding the other link close to the vest. uh... that link keeps taking me to the BGP homepage. Wait, nevermind, don't know what happened.

02Ram54 Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Well, Marriott isn't exactly proof that he doesn't get most of him money from Mormons... especially when you consider the amount of self-financing that's likely to be reflected in the 4th qtr reports.

Grant it, Willard Marriott was Mormon as is his son, Bill Marriott. But I don't think you can say the same for the big investment and banking companies.
AcesFull Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I am tired of the religious bigotry directed at Mitt Romney. What is the point in circulating unfounded internet rumors when it is so easy to use the internet to debunk the rumors in advance? I couldn't care less if Romney gets most of his money from Mormons, Huckabee gets most of his money from evangelicals, or Thompson gets most of his money from female Law and Order fans. It is also sad to see the class envy that long ago infected the Democratic Party showing its ugly head among Republicans. Romney earned most of his personal fortune in the private sector. It is his business and his business alone if he chooses to use that money to finance his own campaign. Most of the other candidates are so visibly jeolous of Romney during the debates it is disgusting. They obviously resent his success and in doing so they are behaving more like liberal Democrats than Republicans. The more I watch Romney, the more I have grown to like him as a candidate. BTW, why are the religious beliefs of Romney and Huckabee legitimate issues and very little has been mentioned about Obama's church?

I am honestly still struggling with the Mormon issue and have spent an hour or so on their website to gather more information. I have heard a comment that if the teachings of Obama's church was done by a white church, people would be losing their minds and likening it to Bob Jones or Fred Phelps. I have not read anything about it though. One thing interesting, the leader of Bob Jones University endorsed Mitt.
AcesFull Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Why is Mormonism an issue at all? Did Romney push his religion as Governor of Massachussets? Did he impose some strange requirements on the employees of his companies? Religion is not an issue with me unless obvious hypocrisy is involved (e.g., Clinton and his Bible photo-ops).

Would you vote for a Islamic candidate? Like any politician, I want a candidate that represents my views on things whether it is foreign relations, economy, abortion, faith, etc, etc. That is why it is an issue.
